Other ID: ATL2 89-3; 89, Leg 3

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): John Grow

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Sampling: Geology, Seismics: Air Gun / Water Gun, Seismics: Boomer, Seismics: Sparker, Electro-Magnetic: Magnetics, Sonar: Sidescan, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Conduct a geology and geophysics cruise along the Atlantic continental margin between Virginia and Cape Cod, concentrating on the continental shelf and slope between Virginia and Long Island where high-resolution seismic reflection profiling, vibracoring and bottom samples are needed for Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and USGS environmental impact studies in areas where petroleum lease sales are being considered. Single-channel seismic reflection profiles (airgun), gravity, and magnetics (Legs 1-3) and seismic refraction (Leg 3 only) programs for regional geologic resource assessment studies will also be conducted.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Norfolk, VA

End Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

Start Date: 1975-05-17

End Date: 1975-05-31

Equipment Used: 3.5 kHz, Alpine Vibracorer, Raytheon 3.5 kHz sonar (CESP II) system, Air gun, Seismic Engineering streamer, Del Norte 26 sparker, Varian V-75 magnetometer, ORE sidescan, Magnavox satellite positioning system, Loran-C

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Collected seismic reflection profiles, plus three seismic refraction lines along the outer shelf and continental slope off New Jersey.
