Other ID: 75-4

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): David W. Folger

Affiliate Investigator(s): J. Pesch - EPA; D. Lear - EPA

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sonar: Sidescan, Imagery: Photo, Sampling: Chemistry, Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Environmental Data: Temperature, Environmental Data: Dissolved Oxygen, Environmental Data: Conductivity, Environmental Data: Turbidity, Time Series: Mooring (physical oceanography), Environmental Data: Current, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The main objectives of the cruise were to assess biologic, geologic, and hydrologic characteristics of the Philadelphia sewage and Dupont acid dump sites. Bottom sediments and organisms were to be selectively sampled with respect to microtopography. The surficial flocky layer was to be sampled if possible. Bottom current direction and velocity were to be measured, and the temperature, salinity, and oxygen distribution of the water column assessed. These data were to assist in evaluating the effects of the wastes on water column and bottom. The USGS objectives were to assist in the assessment of waste impact on geologic phenomena and to evaluate the character of the bottom with respect to microtopography, sediment texture and mobility.

Vehicle(s):

End Port/Location: Cape May, NJ

Equipment Used: ORE sidescan, Benthos model 372 camera and strobe, Niskin water sampler, Smith-MacIntyre grab, Grab sampler - Shipek, Bathythermograph, O2 sensor, Salinometer, Rocking Chair Dredge, Plankton nets, Nephelometer, Grab sampler, Current, Seabed drifters, Loran-A

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: A USGS observer aboard the submarine for one dive at each of the 5 EPA stations acquired TV, 35 mm color and black and white photography, and sediment samples. From the ADVANCE II, bottom photos, BT lowerings, nephelometer lowerings, sediment samples, suspended matter samples, and sidescan sonar data were collected. Bottom photos at 3 stations; BT lowerings: 10; Nephelometer lowerings: 5; Sediment samples: 25; Suspended matter samples: 12; Sidescan sonar data: 30 km; Dive observation transcripts: 6 (Dives #437, 443, 448, 454, 459, and 462).
