Scientific Purpose/Goals: The general scientific objective of the cruise was to investigate the shallow subsurface sediments within the South Texas OCS. Specific objectives consisted of the following: A) Obtaining pipe cores to fill data gaps in the station grid established for initial sampling. Five areas were selected for closer-spaced sampling on the basis of FY 75 results, in order to determine sources of sediment and depositional trends in specific parts of the shelf. B) Obtaining hydraulically dampened cores to provide undisturbed samples of the uppermost few centimeters of sediment for studying rates of sedimentation.

End Port/Location:

Start Date: 1975-11-21

End Date: 1975-11-26

Equipment Used: Gravity corer, Piston corer, Lorac Positioning System

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: The objectives of the cruise were accomplished within the time frame alloted and without any outstanding problems. The concern of the ship's captain and the LORAC navigators for the success of the cruise was genuine and resulted in development of an excellent working relationship between the scientific party, ship's crew, and navigators. Pipe cores: 103; Hydraulically dampened cores: 5; Ship's track: 560 km.
