Other ID: COST WELL NO. B-3
Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center
Principal Investigator(s): Claude (Wylie) Poag
Affiliate Investigator(s): William Patterson
Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology
Scientific Purpose/Goals: Resource exploration well drilled by a consortium of oil companies on the New Jersey offshore continental slope. Continental Offshore Stratigraphic Test No. B-3 well (COST B-3) was drilled by the BEN OCEAN LANCER, a dynamically positioned drill ship operated by Chevron USA. Lease block would be made available upon completion of well.
Start Date: 1978-10-09
End Date: 1979-01-25
Equipment Used: Well drilling
Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Grain size analysis; Morphology; Resource exploration potential;
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: COST No. B-3 well: 3,990 m (13,092 ft.) below sea floor (total depth 4,822 m, 15,820 ft. below Kelly Bushing). Conventional cores: 4; Sidewall cores: 689; Geophysical surveys: 3; Seismic velocity surveys: 3.
