Principal Investigator(s): David W. Folger

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Seismics: Sparker, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Sampling: Geology, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Obtain high-resolution data from eastern portion of St. Croix, in addition to obtaining some core data for ground truth on a suspected sand body. In the Saba Island area off St. Thomas - St. John, make current measurements, obtain surface samples, and core the reef masses to obtain samples for dating.

Vehicle(s):

End Port/Location:

Start Date: 1979-03-18

End Date: 1979-03-31

Equipment Used: Del Norte 26 sparker, ORE 140 transceiver/1036 transducer sub-bottom profiler, Alpine Vibracorer, Well drilling, Motorola Mini-Ranger III

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Approximately 100 km of high-resolution data were acquired (mostly minisparker). The 1032 system lacked the power to penetrate the hard carbonate surface. The few centimeters of sand could not be resolved. 5 days of continuous current data were acquired, the last two under winter storm conditions. Vibracores: 4; 120 cm drill core: 1 (30 cm recovery); surface samples: 12.
