Other ID: LY-711-82
Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center
Location: Long Island Sound, Long Island Platform, New York, Connecticut, United States, North America, North Atlantic;
Principal Investigator(s): Deborah Hutchinson
Data Type(s): Seismics: Multichannel, Seismics: Sonobouy, Seismics: Sparker, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Location-Elevation: Navigation
Scientific Purpose/Goals: 1. Collect high-resolution seismic profiles at the Navy test site to map the shallow stratigraphy and velocity structure. 2. Measure the signature of three seismic sources (40-in3 airgun, 80-in3 watergun, 15-in3 watergun) frequently used with the multichannel seismic system. 3. Expand the multichannel seismic grid of the Long Island Platform in order to map basement and sub-basement structures. 4. Trace the northern and southern extents of the New York Bight fault and determine the youngest reflector which is offset.
Start Date: 1982-07-08

Equipment Used: Water gun (wh), Multichannel seismics, Seismic refraction, Sparker system, ORE 140 transceiver/1036 transducer sub-bottom profiler, Northstar 6000 LORAN-C
Information to be Derived:
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Cruise was successful in completion of the objectives initially laid out. This was a "cruise of opportunity" in that NUSC provided the ship time. I heartily recommend future joint efforts based on the success of this effort. 12-channel multichannel: 1098 km; Minisparker: 411 km; 3.5 kHz: 1509 km; Magnetometer: 37 km.
