Other ID: GYRE 82-11; 11-G-82; 82-G-11

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Frank T. Manheim

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Paul Bowker

Data Type(s): Electro-Magnetic: Gravity, Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Sonar: Single Beam

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Test new techniques to determine thickness, distribution and quality of mineral deposits on the Blake Plateau with special reference to manganese nodules and manganese-phosphate pavements; obtain ANGUS/ARGUS wide-angle bottom photos for visual ground truthing; collect pavement core samples; determine nodule concentration via MFES; and determine mineral thickness via seismic reflection/refraction.

Vehicle(s):

End Port/Location: Miami, FL

Start Date: 1982-09-18

End Date: 1982-09-28

Equipment Used: Dredge, Gravity corer, Gravity meter (wh), Integrated Navigation System, ANGUS deep tow camera system, 3.5 kHz

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Camera lowerings - Approx. 45 hrs. and 18,000 photos; High-resolution acoustic profiling: 1000 km; MFES profiling: 100 km; Bottom reflection lowerings: 3; Bottom refraction experiment: 1; Dredges: 18 (300 kg rocks recovered); Cores: 11.
