Field Activity Details for field activity 1986-025-FA

Other ID: S1-86

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Barry Irwin

Affiliate Investigator(s): John Gann, USGS-Menlo Park

Information Specialist(s): Barry Irwin

Data Type(s): Electro-Magnetic: Gravity, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sonar: Single Beam

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Collect gravity data in the Jamaica-Cayman Islands region.

Start Port/Location: Kingston, Jamaica

End Port/Location: Kingston, Jamaica

Start Date: 1986-10-24

End Date: 1986-11-19

Equipment Used: 12 kHz, LaCoste-Romberg gravimeter G-179, Magnavox System 5000 integrated navigation system

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Gravity data were collected along 6608 km of 18 km-spaced tracklines around the north, east and west coasts of Jamaica and around the Cayman Islands. Mean line crossing statistics for the leg were generally below 1 mgal with standard deviations ranging from 1.7 to 2.2 mgals. The STARFIX system worked almost continuously allowing 24-hr. collection of data totalling as much as 320 km/day.
