Data Type(s): Electro-Magnetic: Gravity, Sonar: Single Beam, Electro-Magnetic: Magnetics, Location-Elevation: Navigation
Scientific Purpose/Goals: Collect gravity and bathymetric data offshore W. Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal on a 3 nm grid with internal consistency +/-3 mgals. The GE 810 correlation sonar was tested around Gran Canaria during the first part of the cruise.
Vehicle(s):
Start Port/Location: Las Palmas, Canary Islands
End Port/Location: Dakar, Senegal
Start Date: 1987-06-12
End Date: 1987-07-17
Equipment Used: LaCoste-Romberg gravimeter G-179, 12 kHz, Geometrics G-856 magnetometer, GE 810 Correlation sonar, Gyro compass, GPS (wh), Magnavox satellite positioning system
Information to be Derived:
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Departed Las Palmas, Gran Canaria 12 June 1987 to test General Electric 810 Correlation Sonar along the coast of Western Sahara. On 19 June returned to Las Palmas to offload test personnel and resumed survey along offshore Western Sahara. Survey continued off Mauritania and Senegal. The 810 Sonar/MK 29 Gyro system worked flawlessly. Most lines were cut short on the eastern end due to shoals.
