Other ID: MALLIK 5L-38

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): William Winters

Affiliate Investigator(s): T.S. Collett - USGS-Denver; S.R. Dallimore - CGS; T. Uchida - JAPEX

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Three 1200 m deep wells will be drilled on Richards Island, Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories, Canada to explore the presence of subpermafrost gas hydrate. Gas hydrates have been of global interest during the past decade because of their potential impact on energy reserves, global climate change, continental margin slope stability and petroleum drilling hazards.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Mallik site, Northwest Territories, Canada

End Port/Location: Mallik site, Northwest Territories, Canada

Start Date: 2002-02-15

End Date: 2002-03-15

Equipment Used: Well drilling

Information to be Derived: Morphology;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Gas hydrate production well: 1, 1200 m; Scientific observation wells: 2, 1200 m each; Sample: 50 pressure vessels and 4 Dewar flasks.

Staff: William Winters

Affiliate Staff:
T.S. Collett (USGS) - co-Ch. Scientist; Scott R. Dallimore (GSC) - Scientific leader; Takashi Uchida - JAPEX; Michael Weber - GeoForschungsZentrum
