Data Type(s): Sampling: Biology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Collect pre-spawning adult river herring from Trunk River in order to determine the flux of mercury in this coastal ecosystem by way of migrating fish. Continue the time-series of Hg data on herring started with the migration of 2008.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Trunk River, Oyster Pond

End Port/Location: Trunk River, Oyster Pond

Start Date: 2011-04-04

End Date: 2011-04-05

Equipment Used: Cast net

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: One male adult herring was collected on the evening of April 4 and two female adult herring were collected on April 5, 2011 as they migrated upstream in Trunk River near the bike path bridge. The fish were weighed, length measured, and subsampled for total mercury concentration. The eggs were also analyzed for mercury.
