Scientific Purpose/Goals: To measure methane and carbon dioxide in the air and water of the Arctic Ocean.
Start Port/Location: Dutch Harbor, AK
End Port/Location: Dutch Harbor, AK
Start Date: 2012-10-05
End Date: 2012-10-25
Equipment Used: Temperature and salinity, Digital camera, GPS (wh), HYPACK, Sensors - other mooring
Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis;Laboratory sensor data;Physical property data;
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Methane and carbon dioxide in air (3 elevations above the ocean: 35 feet, 50 feet, and 105 feet) and surface water were measured during transits, transects, and while on CTD / mooring station in the Arctic Ocean. Additionally samples were collected vertically from CTD casts and analyzed for methane. Atmospheric measurements (wind speed, direction, temperature) were made by 3 AirMars mounted at 3 different elevations above the ocean. Temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, and ORP measurements were made by a YSI water parameter sonde.
Staff: John Pohlman
Notes: Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer (CRDS) equipment will be used for measuring methane and carbon dioxide. Additionally we will collect weather data and water samples.
