Seventy-six parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified in wildfire ash (airborne and in situ), stream sediment, steelhead, crayfish, and marine mussels after the August 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Wildfire and at regular intervals over three years.

    Airborne ashes were collected up to one month post-fire. In situ ashes were collected at 6-month intervals for three years post-fire. Stream sediments were collected after first flush, high flow, and low flow conditions for three years post-fire. Marine mussels were collected in February after high flows and in June or July after low flows for three years. Steelhead and crayfish were collected in May, June, and July for two years, and PAHs were measured in Year 1 biota.

Why was the data set created?

PAHs are created by incomplete combustion of organic matter during wildfires and characteristic PAH ratios in sedimentary records are used to reconstruct fire histories. The CZU Wildfire provided a unique opportunity to quantify PAH concentrations immediately post-fire and subsequent changes over three years, identify wildfire signatures in parent PAHs and substituted (alkylated) PAHs to broaden the scope of wildfire studies and determine whether wildfire PAHs were taken up by stream and marine biota.

    Date: 16-Aug-2023 (process 1 of 3)
    SAMPLE COLLECTION. Stream sediment was collected by hand from recently deposited fine-grained material on stream banks with solvent-cleaned stainless steel sampling tools and stored in pre-combusted amber glass jars. Ash, soil, and mixed samples were collected from undisturbed forest sites by hand with solvent-cleaned stainless steel sampling tools, stored in combusted 500 milliliter glass jars, and sieved to remove particles greater than 2 mm in diameter.

    TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON CONTENT. Carbon analysis was performed at the PCMSC Carbon Laboratory by combustion, acidification, and coulometric detection using a UIC CM5015 Coulometer. Ash and sediment were dried overnight at 80 degrees Celsius and pulverized by hand in a mortar and pestle. 20 milligrams of material for total carbon (TC) were combusted at 950 degrees Celsius (UIC CM 5230 furnace) and quantified with a coulometric titration. 20 milligrams of material for total inorganic carbon (TIC) were digested with perchloric acid (UIC CM 5130 acid digester) and quantified with a coulometric titration. Total organic carbon (TOC) was calculated as the difference between TC and TIC. Average values of process duplicates are reported. Person who carried out this activity:

    PARENT AND ALKYLATED POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON (PAH) CONCENTRATIONS, PERCENT MOISTURE, PERCENT LIPID: 76 parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed at SGS AXYS Analytical Services Ltd. (AXYS), a ultra-trace laboratory, by their extended PAH method. Samples were spiked with surrogate standards, Soxhlet-extracted with dichloromethane, and cleaned up with column chromatography and activated copper. PAHs were quantified by isotope dilution low resolution gas chromatography mass spectrometry in multiple ion detection mode to acquire data for target analytes and paired surrogates to minimize false positive identifications. Sample-specific concentration Reporting Limits (RL) for every analyte are reported for every quantified analyte. Due to the wide range of values in environmental samples, PAH concentrations are reported with three significant figures (XXX, XX.X, X.XX, 0.XXX, etc.) rather than a fixed measurement resolution.     POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHs): Quality Assurance (QA) measures for PAHs included external calibration curves, internal standards, lab blanks, and spiked matrix samples. All raw data are shown without censorship with corresponding QA flags and definitions. K-flagged values represent maximum possible concentrations. Percent recovery acceptance criteria in spiked matrix samples for the 16 priority PAHs were 70-130 percent except for Fluorene, which was 60-140 percent, and 50-150 percent for other PAHs.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
