Description:
Abstract:
RBRduo pressure and temperature sensors mounted on aluminum frames, were moored in shallow (4-9 m) water depths along the West side of Whidbey Island, Washington, to measure wave heights and periods. Continuous pressure fluctuations were transformed into surface-wave observations of wave heights, periods, and frequency spectra at 30-minute intervals.
Purpose:
Wave observations were collected as part of the development of the USGS Puget Sound Coastal Storm Modeling System (PS-CoSMoS) across the Salish Sea. The wave data help support the validation of the PS-CoSMoS regional wave model for forecasting future extreme high-water levels and flood risk with projected sea-level rise and storms and to characterize the present-day wave climate.

Process_Description:
RBRduo pressure and temperature sensors (early 2015 generation) were deployed and recovered at 8 sites along the west Whidbey Island Washington State coast over 3 deployments between December 12, 2018, and February 10, 2020. Instruments were mounted to weighted frames with a 1-m footprint ~20-cm off of the seabed. The first deployment was located at sites W1 and W2 between December 12, 2018 and April 22, 2019. The second deployment was located at sites W3, W4, and W5 between April 22, 2019, and September 4, 2019. The third deployment was located at sites W6, W7 and W8 between September 4, 2019, and February 10, 2020. The sensor at site W6 was not found. W1-8 locations are found the metadata of the netCDF data files. Mushroom and fluke anchors were attached to frames with chain. Twelve-inch surface floats were attached to anchors for recovery and were not expected to impact instrument recording. Pressure and temperature were recorded continuously. W3, W4, and W5 used a 2Hz sampling frequency while other sites used at 4Hz sampling frequency. During deployment and recovery, depth was sampled with a handheld sonar, and position was recorded with a handheld GPS.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Samples were downloaded from the sensors using the manufacturers' software, Ruskin v2.4 and processed using the xarray Python package. Data quality assurance and quality control was performed by inspecting all variables and removing spurious values either out of water or of suspected instrument malfunction. Data flagged are available in the netCDF metadata. All times are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Files are named using the convention W#b_cal.nc or W#s_a.nc, where W stands for Whidbey Island, # is the site number and “b_cal” is the file-type for wave-burst data while “s_a” is the filetype for bulk wave statistics data averaged over 30-minute intervals.
