Why was the data set created?

Data were acquired to characterize quaternary deformation and sediment dynamics along the central and northern Cascadia margin. A total of 62 tracklines were collected and extend from the nearshore to the deformation front and were spaced between 25 and 50 kilometers apart. This work occurred on UW’s R/V Rachel Carson (UW cruise IDs RC0028 and RC0029). chirpdata were collected coincidently with high-resolution multichannel sparker seismic data (MCS). These data and information are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and general public.

    Date: 02-Apr-2020 (process 1 of 1)
    The Discover acquisition software (v.6) output envelope chirp data in JSF format. Sioseis seismic software (https://sioseis.ucsd.edu/) was used to export to SEG-Y format with standard header byte locations. X and Y navigation points are written to header bytes 81/85 in UTM zone 10N coordinates. SEG-Y data files were compressed into the zip file 2019-024-FA.chirp.zip.

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
    Quality control was conducted during acquisition. Some seismic profiles have gaps in them due to system crashes or intentional shutdowns as required, under terms of our operating permit, to protect marine mammals.

    The manufacturer’s stated accuracy of the GPS used is +/- 0.6 meters 95 percent confidence (DGPS) (http://dev.wr.usgs.gov/idb/media/service_materials/2022/12/07/101121522789/Hemisphere_V100specsheet.pdf)
