<descript>
A nested spectral wave model (Simulating Waves WAves Nearshore [SWAN]; Booij and others, 1999) was deployed for the central Beaufort Sea coast of Alaska to simulate waves for the period from 1979 to 2019. Results in the form of spatial summary statistics, describing wave parameters, wind speed and sea-ice area cover for the intermediate grid (see Overview Image on main page of data release), are provided. Further information can be found in Nederhoff and others (2021).
<purpose>The purpose of this data release is to provide researchers, engineers, and other potential users with summary statistics for the SWAN wave model of the Central Beaufort Sea coast of Alaska. This model was developed through collaborative work between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Deltares USA. Financial support was provided by the USGS Coastal Marine Hazards and Resources Program and U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management through Interagency Agreement M17PG00046 for the project titled: ‘Wave and Hydrodynamic Modelling Within the Nearshore Beaufort Sea.’ This data release does not intend to provide comprehensive oceanic input data from outside sources, nor does the use of those products imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.</purpose>
<supplinf>Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.</supplinf>

<enttypd>The zip file contains .tiff files with summary statistics. These cover wave, wind and sea ice statistics for the hindcast period from 1979 to 2019. The file names reflect the combination of parameters and derived statistics that can be found in the files as described below. Parameters include significant wave height (Hs), mean wave period (Tm), mean wave direction (Dm), wave orbital velocity (orbital), wave steepness (steepness), wave power (wave_power), wind speed (umag), and sea ice area fraction (ice). Statistics are given for minimum (min), mean (mean), and maximum (max) values, as well as for the 0.250, 0.500, 0.750, 0.950, and 0.995 percentiles. Waves statistics for all variables were only computed when Hs >= 0.15 m, except for Hs itself for which the minimum wave height can be zero.</enttypd>
