Description:
Abstract:
This section of the data release contains photographs of 34 vibracores that were collected aboard the R/V Bold Horizon in 2019 on U.S. Geological Survey Field Activity 2019-649-FA offshore San Francisco, California. Continuous line-scan photographs were created in the lab to assess sand and gravel resources in Federal and State waters for potential use in future beach nourishment projects along stretches of the coast where critical erosion hotspots have been identified.
Purpose:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created continuous line-scan photos of vibracores collected in 2019 offshore San Francisco, California. The goal of the vibracore imaging was to provide detailed subsurface sediment characterization of the study area. This cruise was funded through partnerships with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the State of California Ocean Protection Council (OPC).

34 cores were collected on cruise 2019-649-FA with a Rossfelder P-5 vibracorer.

Process_Description:
A Geotek GeoScan V Linescan Imaging system was used to collect line-scan images at resolutions of 25 micrometer pixel widths. Polarizing filters on the camera lens and the LED lamp lights were used to reduce glare effects for wet split-cores. 37 photograph files were created for 34 vibracores (cores SF12, SF16 and SF18 are two sections). The images include a composite ruler that was added using the “Add Ruler 1.4” Geotek software, which exported the final TIFF and software-proprietary XML files, adding “R” to the file name. The camera is calibrated for color balance before each use. The images were collected with a 40-millisecond exposure time, aperture setting of F4.07, and a resolution of 100 pixels per centimeter. An image-specific metadata file was automatically created by the Geotek software for each photograph, providing information on color calibration, pixel dimensions, physical dimensions, and camera settings.
