Abstract:
Physical, environmental, and substrate observations were derived from underwater video collected by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) offshore of Morro Bay, California. A majority of the data were acquired during three separate surveys in 2019 in support of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)/Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) California Deepwater Investigations and Groundtruthing I (Cal DIG I) project. Additional observations from underwater video data collected by the Ocean Exploration Trust's E/V Nautilus in 2020 are also included. Slope, rugosity, and depth information derived from multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetry data, and induration (an indication of substrate hardness) information, are also included in the point data. A joint USGS-BOEM-MBARI cruise, which took place from 19-26 September 2019 on the R/V Bold Horizon (USGS field activity 2019-642-FA), focused on conducting biological surveys using MBARI's MiniROV (dives M137-148). Additional surveys were conducted from 02-14 February 2019 (dives D1120-1131) and from 01-11 November 2019 (dives D1202-1217) using MBARI's R/V Western Flyer and ROV Doc Ricketts. The ROV-video surveys were designed and conducted to collect video ground-truth information about substrate and biota. MBARI-acquired video was analyzed by MBARI. Analysis of Nautilus video data was done by the USGS.

Why was the data set created?

These data were used to ground truth a supervised classification of multibeam echosounder (MBES) data into Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standards (CMECS) polygons. This project was conducted to map surficial geology and benthic habitat as part of the USGS/BOEM Interagency Agreement M17PG0021 titled California Deepwater Investigations and Ground-truthing I (Cal DIG I). These data are intended to provide regional surficial geology and benthic habitat information in an area of interest for offshore wind energy development. These data are also intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the public. These data can be used in GIS and statistical analysis projects, or other software to spatially identify geomorphologic biota, surficial lithology, and biotopes in the study area. Field activities were augmented through the Expanding Pacific Research and Exploration of Submerged Systems (EXPRESS) collaboration (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/pcmsc/science/express-expanding-pacific-research-and-exploration-submerged-systems?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects).

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
    Dissolved oxygen values were obtained with a Sea-Bird Scientific SBE 43 sensor. The sensor has an initial accuracy of 2 percent of saturation and a stability of 0.5 percent per 1000 hours of use without membrane replacement. Temperature and Salinity were measured with a Valeport miniCT sensor. The sensor has a conductivity accuracy of 0.01 MS/cm and a temperature accuracy of 0.01 degrees centigrade. Depth values were obtained with a Valeport ultraP pressure sensor. The sensor has an accuracy of 0.01 percent full scale. The accuracy of grain size, rugosity, and slope estimates based on visual assessment of video imagery and cannot be quantified.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
    Horizontal coordinates are based on a Sonardyne USBL tracking system with a slant range accuracy of 0.07 percent.
