Data were collected and processed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC), with fieldwork activity number A-01-13-HW. The 1-m bathymetry data are provided as a GeoTIFF file. Purpose: In February 2013, staff from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) collected bathymetry and acoustic backscatter data offshore the islands of Maui (Olowalu, Pu`unoa Point) and Kaho`olawe (Kuia Shoal), Hawaii using an interferometric bathymetric sidescan sonar system mounted to the hull of the vessel AlyceC. The acquisition was conducted to support seafloor characterization and benthic habitat mapping efforts in selected nearshore coral reef environments of Hawaii. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. These data can be used with geographic information systems or other software to identify bathymetric features. These data are not intended to be used for navigation. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: In February 2013 the USGS, PCMSC mapped two sites offshore the islands of Maui (Olowalu and Pu`unoa Point) and one site off the island of Kaho`olawe (Kuia Shoal) in Hawaii. A SEA 234-kHz Interferometric SWATHplus-M bathymetric sonar system was pole-mounted to the starboard gunwale of the vessel Alyce C. Water column sound velocity data that was collected throughout the survey was applied to the data during collection as well as tide data from a local tide station. Based on observed tides, an adjustment was made to shift data from WGS84 ellipsoid elevations to MLLW datum. For Maui data the difference between MLLW and WGS84 was about 16.1 m. The survey line files were imported into Caris HIPS and SIPS software (version 9) for bathymetric processing. The data were cleaned of obvious bad soundings and the soundings were gridded into a 1-m resolution surface. The surface was exported as a 1-m resolution GeoTiff raster file in UTM, zone 4, WGS-84 coordinates relative to Mean Lower Low Water.
