Spatial measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity between 0.25 and 0.50 m water depth were collected every 10-seconds along and across shore at 12 principal study areas along west and east Hawaii Island. Measurements were made between 2010 and 2013 during different seasons and tide states over the course of 1.0 to 2.5 hours to evaluate the spatial and temporal extent of water properties that influence coral reef health and coral reef habitat availability.
Continuous quantitative data from a range of depths and distances from shore were collected to characterize the temporal and spatial variability in water temperatures that influence coral reef habitats, coral health and the vulnerability of coral to bleaching. These data also establish important baseline information with which to track and identify changes owing to climate and land use change, including changes in runoff of terrestrial water and contaminants that can affect the quality of habitat for corals, fish and other wildlife of concern. Along the arid west coast of Hawaii Island terrestrial inputs of water occur primarily in the form of groundwater and this study focused on examining the extent that groundwater inputs to the coast influences coral reef water temperatures, coral health, and potential cold water refugia where corals may find resilience in light of observed increases in global coral bleaching associated with rising sea surface temperatures.

Stated accuracies of the YSI 6920V2 multiparameter probe with ROX Optical Oxygen Sensor and Optical 6136 Turbidity Sensor are as follows: temperature = +/- 0.15 degrees Celsius; specific conductivity = +/- 0.001 mS/cm; salinity = +/- 0.1 parts per thousand; pH = +/- 0.2 units; dissolved oxygen percent saturation = +/- 1%; dissolved oxygen concentration = +/- 0.1 milligram per liter; turbidity = +/- 0.3 NTU. No formal attribute accuracy tests were conducted.
No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted.
Data are complete as presented. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details. "NaN=missing or unmeasured values."
Stated horizontal accuracy of the Garmin GPS is +/- 3.2 m.
Water temperature, specific conductance, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (concentration and percent saturation), and turbidity were measured with a YSI 6920V2 multiprobe water quality sensor and YSI 650 data collector. Measurements were made of surface water between 0.25 and 0.50 m depth every 10 seconds (~20 m) along transects along and across shore. Latitude and longitude for each measurement were collected with a Garmin GPS Map76SCx integrated with the data collector.
