Abstract:
Time series data of water surface elevation, wave height, currents, and turbidity were acquired during the winters of 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 in support of a study on the morphological change of rippled scour depressions off Santa Cruz, CA. One set of instruments (SCW) was mounted at the end of Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf during both winters. Another set of instruments (M1T) was deployed offshore in Monterey Bay each winter; the two offshore winter locations were different, but each were about 0.5 km offshore of Point Santa Cruz.
Purpose:
The continuous measurements of waves and tides from these instrument deployments, coupled with available meteorological measurements of wind and rainfall, provide information on physical forcing mechanisms responsible for observed morphological change in repeat mapping surveys.

The accuracy of the GPS unit used to locate the instruments is +/- 5 meters.

There are two sources of uncertainty associated with vertical positioning of the instruments: 1) the measuring tools used during instrument mounting, 2) the amount of settling that occurs during deployment. There was no evidence that the platforms settled to a large degree, they are easily lifted by one person, the sediment tends to be very compacted in the study area, and analysis of distance to bed data did not show gradients over the duration of deployment. The measuring tools used to mount the instruments onto the platforms have a resolution of 0.1 cm resulting in an uncertainty of 0.05 cm.
