Title:
Repeat high-resolution acoustic-backscatter datasets collected between 2014 and 2016 of a field of crescent-shaped rippled scour depressions in northern Monterey Bay, California
Abstract:
Between November 2014 and June 2016 the U.S. Geological Survey, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) conducted eight repeat, high-resolution bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter surveys of a small patch of seafloor offshore Santa Cruz in northern Monterey Bay, California. PCMSC also collected oceanographic time-series data over the same two-year period. This metadata file describes the eight acoustic-backscatter datasets.

Why was the data set created?

The repeat bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter datasets and time-series data were originally collected to study the structure and evolution of a field of rippled scour depressions (RSDs) found in northern Monterey Bay, California. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2017 (process 1 of 3)
Swath bathymetric and acoustic backscatter surveys were conducted with a SWATHplus-M 234-kHz interferometric side-scan sonar system pole-mounted on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) R/V Parke Snavely. During the mapping missions, an Applanix POS-MV (Position and Orientation System for Marine Vessels) was used to position the vessel during data collection and it also accounted for vessel motion such as heave, pitch, and roll. The POS-MV also recorded position and vessel motion parameters for later post-processing. Sound-velocity profiles were collected throughout the survey days with a Castaway sound velocimeter. The acoustic-backscatter data were processed using SonarWiz software. The software normalizes for time-varying signal loss and beam directivity differences (D. Finlayson, personnel comm.). The acoustic-backscatter data from all 8 surveys were imported into a single SonarWiz project for processing; this allowed all the backscatter data to be normalized over the 8 surveys. After processing, each individual survey data were gridded into their own grid. The resulting images were then exported as Imagine images and imported into a GIS and converted to grids. The grids were then projected from WGS84 to NAD83 using the WGS84_1984_(ITRF08)_to_NAD_1983_2011 tool in Esri ArcTools.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
The accuracy of the SWATHPlus acoustic-backscatter data is unknown since it is believed the backscatter is uncalibrated. Also, during post-processing, the backscatter data from all repeat mapping surveys were gain normalized together so the backscatter data in this report differ from the original individual surveys' data.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
The Applanix POS-MV post-processed horizontal positional accuracy is about 0.1 m with roll and pitch accuracies of about 0.02 degrees (https://www.applanix.com/downloads/products/specs/posmv/POS-MV-WaveMaster-II.pdf). The SWATHPlus sonar system (234 kHz) has an across track resolution of 5 cm (http://www.bathyswath.com/sites/default/files/documents/ETD_2002_Bathyswath%20information_EN.pdf). Accuracies of final products may be lower due to total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
    Not applicable to acoustic-backscatter data
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
