Abstract:
Between November 2014 and June 2016 the U.S. Geological Survey, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) conducted eight repeat, high-resolution bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter surveys of a small patch of seafloor offshore Santa Cruz in northern Monterey Bay, California. PCMSC also collected oceanographic time-series data over the same two-year period. This metadata file describes the eight bathymetry datasets.
Purpose:
The repeat bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter datasets and time-series data were originally collected to study the structure and evolution of a field of rippled scour depressions (RSDs) found in northern Monterey Bay, California. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

Swath bathymetric and acoustic backscatter surveys were conducted with a SWATHplus-M 234-kHz interferometric side-scan sonar system pole-mounted on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) R/V Parke Snavely. During the mapping missions, an Applanix POS-MV (Position and Orientation System for Marine Vessels) was used to position the vessel during data collection and it also accounted for vessel motion such as heave, pitch, and roll. The POS-MV also recorded position and vessel motion parameters for later post-processing. Sound-velocity profiles were collected throughout the survey days with a Castaway sound velocimeter. Post-processed POS-MV Smoothed Best Estimate of Trajectory (SBET) files were merged with the survey line files using BathySwath software and then the line files were imported into Caris HIPS and SIPS software. Soundings were cleaned for obvious errors and gridded into 1-m base surfaces. The base surface was exported as an XYZ ascii file in UTM-10 coordinates referenced to the WGS84 ellipsoid. The ascii file was transformed to UTM-10, NAD83 coordinates relative NAVD88 using VDatum software (version 3.7). The transformed XYZ ascii file was gridded into a 1-m resolution surface using Fledermaus software (version 7.8) converted to an ASCIIRaster file and imported into Esri ArcMap (version 10.3.1). Finally, shaded relief bathymetry grids were generated from the bathymetry data using the Esri, ArcMap [hillshade] tool. Both the bathymetry grids and the shaded relief grids were then exported as a TIFF files in UTM zone 10, NAD-83 coordinates. The shaded relief images do not contain depth/elevation information.
