Description:
Abstract:
Spatial surveys of water column currents were performed between June 14 and 16, 2013, in the mouth of the Columbia River, Oregon and Washington. These data were collected using an acoustic-doppler current profiler (ADCP).
Purpose:
These acoustic-doppler current profiler (ADCP) were collected as a part of a larger investigation into hydrodynamics in the mouth of the Columbia River, Oregon and Washington.

Process_Description:
A total of 25 km of tracklines were surveyed with a vessel-mounted acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) in the mouth of the Columbia River (MCR) between June 14 and June 16, 2013. Three cross-channel transects were surveyed repeatedly to characterize changes in flow and backscatter amplitude at different stages of the tide cycle. Measurements of current velocity and acoustic backscatter amplitude in the water column were collected using a downward looking 600 kHz Teledyne RDI ADCP pole-mounted to the R/V Park Snavely. Positioning and orientation of the ADCP were measured using an Applanix POS MV 320 and recorded at 1 Hz intervals. Data acquisition and merging of the ADCP and positioning data were achieved with Teledyne RDI VMDAS software. While underway, profiles of current velocity and acoustic backscatter data were collected from 1.48 m below the transducer (approximately 2.2 m below the water surface) to the seafloor at 0.5 m intervals. Raw ADCP data were transformed to Earth coordinates in real time using heading and tilt information supplied by the POS MV. Velocity measurements were corrected to remove the motion of the vessel using the bottom ping, which estimates the vessel speed with respect to the seabed.
