Description:
Abstract:
Sediment inputs to Lake Mills, on the Elwha River, Washington, were measured from 1927 to 2016. These measurements represent the annual total sediment load, in tonnes per year, that were input into Lake Mills and partially trapped by Glines Canyon dam. The sediment was allowed to erode and be transported down-river by the removal of the Glines Canyon and Elwha dams during 2011 to 2014. The measurements were taken as part of a study investigating the river channel's morphological responses to the removal of two large dams - the Elwha River and Glines Canyon dams.
Purpose:
Data were obtained to assess the morphological and sediment budget responses following the removal of two dams in the Elwha River. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. These data can be used with geographic information systems or other software to identify topographic features.

Process_Description:
Total upstream sediment load was estimated using measurements at USGS gauge 12044900 above Lake Mills and discharge-related empirical relationships derived from sediment measurements from water years 1994--1998 and 2006--2007 (Childers, 2000; Curran and others, 2009; Magirl and others, 2015). The location of the gauge was: north latitude 47 degrees 58'13" and west longitude 123 degrees 35'22", in NE 1/4 NE 1/4 Section 32, Township 29 North, Range 7 West, in Clallam County, Hydrologic Unit 17110020, Olympic National Park, on right bank upstream from Cat Creek, 2.5 mi above site of Glines Canyon Dam (removed), 12.5 mi southwest of Port Angeles, and at river mile 16.0. Drainage area is 198 square miles.
