Title:
Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) profile data in the National Park of American Samoa, Tutuila, American Samoa, 2015
Abstract:
Spatial surveys of water column physical properties were acquired with a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiler for four days in February 2015 and one day in July 2015 off the north coast of the island of Tutuila, American Samoa in support of a study on the coastal circulation patterns within and in the vicinity of the National Park of American Samoa.

Why was the data set created?

These CTD measurements were collected as a part of a larger investigation into the circulation and transport along the coast off the National Park of American Samoa on the island of Tutuila, American Samoa.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 18-Jul-2015 (process 1 of 4)
Conductivity, salinity, and depth (CTD) data were collected with a SeaBird SBE-19 Plus CTD Profiler
    Date: 13-Aug-2015 (process 2 of 4)
Data were accumulated into NetCDF files. Data collected when instruments were out of the water were removed during post-processing. Data were then averaged into 1-m vertical bins.
    Date: 14-Dec-2015 (process 3 of 4)
Files are named with a convention that uses a multi-element alphanumeric code delimited by underscores. The first element for this dataset represent the USGS Field Activity Number (e.g. 2016-626-FA); the second element represents the calendar yearday in which the first data point in the file was taken (e.g., YD48); the third element is an alphanumeric code for the cast number for that year-day.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
No formal attribute accuracy tests were conducted.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
A formal accuracy assessment of the horizontal positional information in the data set has either not been conducted, or is not applicable.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
No formal assessment of vertical accuracy was performed.
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the metadata for each part of this data release carefully for additional details.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
    Data fall within expected ranges.
