    Description:
      Abstract: This portion of the data release presents computed tomography (CT) images from gravity core and push core sediment samples collected from the Escanaba Trough vent field, Gorda Ridge, in the northeast Pacific Ocean (USGS Field Activity 2022-621-FA). These data were collected in 2022 and 2023. A Geotek Rotating X-Ray CT (RXCT) system was used to acquire x-ray images and perform CT reconstructions of unsplit core segments. The full three-dimensional data set consists of individual axial slices which are reconstructed images in TIFF format. These axial slices are oriented perpendicular to the long axis of the core. Two-dimensional orthogonal views are also provided that illustrate representative downcore slabs of each core. Geotek software-proprietary XML files are provided in each folder containing axial slices and orthogonal views, containing more image-scaling and information on x-ray system settings and reconstruction parameters.
      Purpose: Images were obtained to characterize sediment in gravity cores and push cores. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

        Process_Description: Push core and gravity core samples were collected on the R/V Thomas G. Thompson between May 24, 2022, and June 13, 2022, during the TN403 Escanaba Trough expedition, which was led and staffed by USGS employees. Push cores were pushed into sediment at 37 locations by ROV Jason’s manipulator arm in water depths between 3201 and 3301 meters. Gravity cores were collected using a gravity corer at 7 locations in water depths between 3209 and 3304 meters. Gravity cores greater than 60 cm in length were cut into sections onboard the ship and labeled ‘X’ (0-60 cm), ‘Y’ (60-120 cm), and ‘Z’ (>120 cm). All cores were stored upright and refrigerated until return to shore.

      Process_Step:
        Process_Description: CT scans were acquired at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center core facility using a Geotek Rotating X-Ray CT (RXCT) Scanner system, running acquisition software version XCT4. Rotational x-ray images were acquired with a Thermo Kevex PSX10-65W x-ray source every 0.2 degrees at 115 kilovolts (kV) and 450 microamperes. Each whole core segment was scanned individually. Rotational images were reconstructed into axial slice TIFFs using Geotek’s Reconstructor Software. Once reconstructed, the axial slice TIFFs were imported into GeoTek's Image Viewer software and representative two-dimensional orthogonal views were selected. Axial slice TIFF images are organized into a subfolder folder named ‘SliceViews’, and orthogonal TIFF images are in the subfolder ‘OrthogonalViews’. These folders are compressed into single zip files with filenames corresponding to each core scanned. There are 7 push cores that were scanned as split cores, rather than whole cores (J2-1418-PC08, J2-1418-PC12, J2-1418-PC15, J2-1419-PC05, J2-1419-PC14, J2-1420-PC02, J2-1420-PC14). The zip files for these cores contain an ‘OrthogonalViews’ subfolder with reconstructed TIFF images of the split core, and a ‘SliceViews’ text file with directory information for raw data. The raw data (axial slice TIFF images) for these 7 split core scans can be found in the ‘SliceViews’ subfolder of ‘TN403_SplitCores_CT.zip’.
