This data release contains geochemical data of oxidized subsamples of rock samples collected from the Escanaba Trough vent field, Gorda Ridge, in the northeast Pacific Ocean. These data were collected in 2022 on expedition TN403 (USGS Field Activity 2022-621-FA). Samples were taken to the USGS Pacific Coastal Marine Science Center for subsampling and geochemical analyses. Data include major, minor, and trace element concentrations, location information (latitude, longitude, depth), analytical methods, and instrument detection limits where available.
<purpose>These data serve to expand the knowledge and statistics for deep ocean marine mineral occurrences and composition within the global ocean.</purpose>

<attraccr>All geochemistry data were calibrated against certified reference materials. The average relative percent different (RPD) between measured and certified concentrations was 10-20 percent for Au, W, V, Th, Tb, Bi, Y, Sb, Sn, In, Ga, Er, Dy, Eu, and Rb. Higher RPDs (>20 percent) were observed for Cr, Sm, and Yb. Average RPDs were <10 percent for Ir, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cl, Co, Fe, Gd, Hf, Hg, Ho, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Nb, Nd, Ni, Pb, Pr, S, Si, Sr, Ti, Tl, U, Zn, Zr. There were no CRMs for Ru, Ag, B, Ge, Na, Sc, Se, Ta, Te, and Tm. Duplicate measurements were made for all elements except Os, Ag, Au, Be, Cl, Hf, Ir, Li, Ti, Na, Sc, Tm, Ta, and Lu. The average RPD between duplicate measurements was 10-20 percent for Y, Er, Pr, Eu, K, W, Tb, Tl, Rb, and In. Higher RPDs (>20 percent) were observed for Au, Ir, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Gd, Dy, Te, Ca, Cs, Ni, Yb, Sm, Nd, and Nb. Average RPDs were <10 percent for Fe, S, Si, Th, V, Mn, Cu, Hg, Cd, Pb, Sb, Al, Zn, Co, As, Sr, B, Bi, U, Mg, Sn, Ce, Zr, Ba, Cr, Mo, La, Ho, Ga, Ge, and Se. The instruments and techniques used to generate the geochemical data are included in the data table and also summarized below in the Source Citations since data were generated by commercial laboratories. Limits for each analyte's detection by an instrument are reported in the table. The value -8888 indicates that the measurement for an analyte was below the detection limit and the value -7777 indicates that the measurement for an analyte was above the detection limit. Values of -9999 indicate that no analysis was performed.</attraccr>

<procdesc>Rock samples were collected on the R/V Thomas G. Thompson between May 24, 2022, and June 13, 2022, during the TN403 Escanaba Trough expedition, which was led and staffed by USGS employees. Rocks were collected from the seafloor using the ROV Jason's manipulator arm at water depths between 3192 and 3319 meters. Rock samples were frozen immediately upon recovery from the ROV, stored frozen, and shipped on ice to the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center in Santa Cruz, CA.</procdesc>

<procdesc>In the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center Global Seabed Mineral Resources Lab, rock samples were freeze dried, then the weathered or depositional outer later of the rock was carefully scraped off using a ceramic blade. This outer layer was then ground to a powder (approximately 75 micrometers) using a shatterbox and ceramic-lined bowls and ceramic pucks. Ceramic-lined bowls and pucks were cleaned thoroughly with quartz powder and detergents between samples to avoid cross-contamination. Powdered samples (10-50 grams) were then mailed to commercial analytical labs, Actlabs and Intertek, in individual plastic screw-top containers for geochemical analyses.
