Abstract:
Ferromanganese crust and phosphorite minerals were collected using remotely operated vehicles in the Southern California Borderland during two separate research cruises – NOAA Ocean Exploration Trust cruise NA124 onboard the E/V Nautilus in 2020, and Schmidt Ocean Institute cruise FK210726 onboard the R/V Falkor in 2021. Ferromanganese crust and phosphorite samples were described and subsampled for geochemical analysis at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center. Geochemical analyses were completed by outside commercial laboratories, and the results were provided to the USGS. Geochemical data, bulk and layer thickness information, as well as location information (latitude, longitude, depth) for each sample are provided here. The geochemical Borderland work was funded by the Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center and ship time was funded by NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (grant number NA19OAR110305).
Purpose:
These data serve to expand the knowledge and statistics for deep ocean marine mineral occurrences and composition within the US Exclusive Economic Zone and global ocean.

Certified reference materials, including NOD-A-1 (Atlantic Ocean Mn Nodule) and NOD-P-1 (Pacific Ocean Mn Nodule), were measured for all reported elements. The average relative percent difference (RPD) between measured and certified concentrations was 10–20 percent for Cr, K, Ru, Sb, Sr, Th, and Re. Higher RPDs (>20 percent) were observed for Te, W, and Ge. Average RPDs for all other elements were <10 percent. Duplicate measurements were made for all analytical techniques except Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (CVAAS, Hg analysis). The average RPD between duplicate measurements was 10–20 percent for Cr, Nb, Sc, Ta, and Th. Higher RPDs (>20 percent) were observed for Ag, Hf, Pd, Ru, Re, Se, and Zr. Average RPDs for all other elements were <10 percent. The instruments and techniques used to generate the geochemical data are included in the data table and also summarized below in the Source Citations since data were generated by commercial laboratories. Limits for each analyte's detection by an instrument are reported in the table. The value -8888 indicates that the measurement for an analyte was below the detection limit. Values of -9999 indicate that no analysis was performed.

USGS directed mineral sample collection using remotely operated vehicles in the Southern California Borderland during two separate research cruises – NOAA Ocean Exploration Trust cruise NA124 onboard the E/V Nautilus in 2020 and Schmidt Ocean Institute cruise FK210726 onboard the R/V Falkor in 2021. Mineral samples were air-dried after cleaned of all sediment and biological material, stored at room temperature onboard the ship, then transported to the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) for characterization. A portion of all ferromanganese crusts and phosphorites analyzed for this data release are archived in the Global Marine Mineral Resources rock collection at PCMSC, while the remainder of these mineral samples are archived with other rock types from these expeditions at The Geological Collections at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
