High-resolution chirp sub-bottom data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in April 2011 south of Bainbridge Island and west of Seattle in Puget Sound, Washington. Data were collected aboard the R/V Karluk during field activity K0211PS using an Edgetech SB-512i sub-bottom profiler. Sub-bottom acoustic penetration spans several tens of meters and is variable by location.
<purpose>Data were acquired to support the USGS Catastrophic Coastal and Marine Hazards Program to aide hazard assessment of the Seattle Fault zone in central Puget Sound. Data were collected to image a backthrust fault scarp and surrounding areas to determine locations of thicker sediment piles that contain long earthquake records. These data and information are intended for science researchers, students from elementary through college, policy makers, and general public.</purpose>
