Title:
Parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in watershed soil and reef sediment at Olowalu, Maui, 2022
Abstract:
Seventy six parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), were quantified in watershed and reef sediment from Olowalu, Maui, in February 2022 to explore urban and wildfire effects. Sample locations and total organic carbon contents (OC) are available in the accompanying file OlowaluWatershedReef2022_compositions.csv.

Why was the data set created?

Olowalu Reef on the leeward shore of Maui, Hawaii, is the largest and best developed reef tract on the island and provides coral larvae for distal reefs. Olowalu Reef and its watershed are under increasing anthropogenic pressure in the form of land-based sediment and nutrient runoff, coral bleaching events, and frequent wildfires. Sediment provenance and wildfire contaminants were quantified in Olowalu watersheds and reef sediment to explore linkages between human activities, wildfire and potentially harmful runoff to Olowalu reef communities. Sixteen PAHs are listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) as contaminants of concern due to their potential health effects and persistence in the environment. The USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program gratefully acknowledges funding for contaminant analyses from The Nature Conservancy and Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, and support from the Hawaii Association for Marine Education and Research, Inc.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 17-Feb-2022 (process 1 of 3)
SEDIMENT COLLECTION: Sediment was collected from leeward Maui watersheds and Olowalu Reef in pre-cleaned amber glass jars in February 2022. Stream sediment was collected by hand with stainless steel sampling tools rinsed in ambient water between sites. Subaqueous reef sediment was scooped directly into jars. Samples were stored and transported frozen. Sample collection dates and coordinates are available in the accompanying file OlowaluWatershedReef2022_compositions.csv from this same data release.
    Date: 02-Jun-2023 (process 2 of 3)
PARENT AND ALKYLATED POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON (PAH) CONCENTRATIONS: Approximately 30 grams of frozen sediment was sent to SGS AXYS Analytical Services Ltd. for quantification of 76 parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), which include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), by method MLA-021. Sediment was spiked with surrogate standards, Soxhlet-extracted with dichloromethane, and cleaned up with column chromatography and activated copper. PACs were quantified by isotope dilution low resolution gas chromatography mass spectrometry in multiple ion detection mode to acquire data for target analytes and paired surrogates to minimize false positive identifications. Edits were made to correct the field activity links in the Supplemental Information section. No data were changed. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Users are advised to compare the metadata date of this file to any similar file to ensure they are using the most recent version. (mau@usgs.gov)
  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHs): Quality Control (QC) measures for PAHs included external calibration curves, internal standards, lab blanks, and spiked matrix samples. All raw data are shown without censorship with corresponding QC flags and definitions. Flagged values represent maximum possible concentrations. Percent recoveries of PAH compounds in spiked matrix samples are acceptable between 50 percent and 150. PAH weights and concentrations are reported with three significant figures (XXX, XX.X, X.XX, 0.XXX, and 0.0XXX) rather than a fixed measurement resolution.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
The stated accuracy from the manufacturer for the Garmin handheld GPS used to record sediment collection locations is +/- 3 feet.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
    Data set is complete
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No formal logical consistency tests were conducted.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
