Title:
Acoustic-backscatter data collected in the Cache Slough Complex and the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel, California, during field activity 2018-684-FA
Abstract:
Acoustic-backscatter data were collected during a 2018 swath survey in the Cache Slough Complex and the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel, California. Data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during USGS field activity 2018-684-FA, using interferometric bathymetric sidescan sonar systems mounded to the USGS R/V San Lorenzo and the R/V Kelpfly. The backscatter data are provided as GeoTIFF images.

Why was the data set created?

These data were collected in support of ongoing field experiments and numerical modeling with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to improve our understanding of habitat quality, the influence on various landscape features on ecosystem function, and the effects of restoration actions in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2019 (process 1 of 3)
In 2018 the USGS, PCMSC collected acoustic-backscatter data in the Cache Slough Complex and the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel, California. Interferometric bathymetric sidescan sonar systems were mounted to the USGS, PCMSC R/V San Lorenzo and R/V Kelpfly. Post-processed Applanix POS-MV attitude data (SBET) were merged with each original survey line file to create new post-processed survey line files. The post-processed line files were imported into SonarWiz software (version 6) for backscatter processing. Processed backscatter grids were exported as Imagine images in UTM zone 10 WGS84 coordinates. The images were imported into ArcGIS and projected to UTM zone 10, NAD83 coordinates using the ArcTools project raster function. The backscatter images were then exported as GeoTIFF images in UTM zone 10, NAD83 coordinates. The R/V San Lorenzo and R/V Kelpfly backscatter images were not merged together since the interferometric systems on each platform use different frequencies.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
Not applicable for backscatter data .
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
The Applanix POS-MV post-processed horizontal positional accuracy is about 0.1 m with roll and pitch accuracies of about 0.02 degrees (https://www.applanix.com/downloads/products/specs/posmv/POS-MV-WaveMaster-II.pdf). The SWATHPlus sonar system (234 kHz) has an across track resolution of about 5 cm (http://www.bathyswath.com/sites/default/files/documents/ETD_2002_Bathyswath%20information_EN.pdf). Accuracies of final products may be lower due to total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
    Not applicable to acoustic-backscatter data
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?
