Description:
Abstract:
Bathymetry data were collected during a 2018 swath survey in the Cache Slough Complex and the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel, California. Data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during USGS field activity 2018-684-FA, using interferometric bathymetric sidescan sonar systems mounded to the USGS R/V San Lorenzo and the R/V Kelpfly. The bathymetry data and a shaded-relief version are provided as GeoTIFF images.
Purpose:
These data were collected in support of ongoing field experiments and numerical modeling with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to improve our understanding of habitat quality, the influence on various landscape features on ecosystem function, and the effects of restoration actions in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.
Supplemental_Information:
Additional information about the field activity from which these data were derived is available online at:

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The SWATHPlus sonar system's (234 kHz) depth accuracy reduces with horizontal range. The system has an estimated vertical depth uncertainty ranging from about 0.05 m to 0.34 m over a horizontal range of 0 to 90 m (http://www.bathyswath.com/sites/default/files/documents/ETD_2002_Bathyswath%20information_EN.pdf). Accuracies of final products may be lower due to total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.
Logical_Consistency_Report: No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted
Completeness_Report:
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The Applanix POS-MV post-processed horizontal positional accuracy is about 0.1 m with roll and pitch accuracies of about 0.02 degrees (https://www.applanix.com/downloads/products/specs/posmv/POS-MV-WaveMaster-II.pdf). The SWATHPlus sonar system (234 kHz) has an across track resolution of about 5 cm (http://www.bathyswath.com/sites/default/files/documents/ETD_2002_Bathyswath%20information_EN.pdf). Accuracies of final products may be lower due to total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The Applanix POS-MV post-processed vertical positional accuracy is about 0.2 m (https://www.applanix.com/downloads/products/specs/posmv/POS-MV-WaveMaster-II.pdf). The SWATHPlus sonar system (234 kHz) has a measurement resolution limit of about 0.6 cm and a resolution detection limit of about 3 mm (http://www.bathyswath.com/sites/default/files/documents/ETD_2002_Bathyswath%20information_EN.pdf). Accuracies of final products may be lower due to total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.

Process_Description:
In 2018 the USGS, PCMSC collected bathymetry data in the Cache Slough Complex and the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel, California. Interferometric bathymetric sidescan sonar systems were mounted to the USGS R/V San Lorenzo and R/V Kelpfly. Post-processed Applanix POS-MV attitude data (SBET) were merged with each original survey line file to create new post-processed survey line files. The post-processed line files were imported into SonarWiz software (version 6) for bathymetric processing. The bathymetric data from each vessel were cleaned of obvious bad soundings and the soundings were gridded into individual 1-m surfaces. The surfaces were exported as ASCII XYZ files in UTM zone 10 WGS84 coordinates vertically referenced to the WGS84 ellipsoid. The coordinates were transformed to UTM zone 10 NAD83 coordinates vertically referenced to NAVD88 using V-Datum software. The new XYZ data were imported into QPS Fledermaus software and gridded into 1-m surfaces. The surfaces were exported as ASCIIRaster files and imported into a Geographic Information System (GIS). The Kelpfly and San Lorenzo bathymetry grids were merged together using the "merge to new raster" ArcMap tool. The merged bathymetry grid was then exported as a GeoTIFF file in UTM zone 10, NAD83 coordinates vertically referenced to NAVD88. To create the shaded-relief imagery, an illumination having an azimuth of 300 degrees and 45 degrees above the horizon was applied to the bathymetry grid. The shaded-relief grid was exported as a GeoTIFF file in UTM zone 10, NAD83 coordinates
