Description:
Abstract:
These metadata describe bathymetry data collected during 2017 and 2018 multibeam echosounder surveys of Noyes Submarine Canyon and vicinity, southeast Alaska. Data were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) aboard the NOAA survey vessel Fairweather and the data were post-processed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) for PCMSC research projects.
Purpose:
In 2017 and 2018 the NOAA survey vessel Fairweather collected bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data in and around Noyes Submarine Canyon in southeast Alaska using a Kongsberg EM-710 multibeam echosounder (NOAA survey D00208, https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nos/D00001-D02000/D00208.html and NOAA survey D00245, https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nos/D00001-D02000/D00245.html). These surveys were conducted to map the offshore expression of the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather fault system that runs for approximately 500 kilometers off the coast of southeast Alaska and British Columbia. These were part of a series of surveys to map the entire offshore component of the fault. The fault system has generated numerous powerful earthquakes in the magnitude 7 and 8 range. This new mapping will help understand the fault's slip rate, earthquake recurrence intervals, and paleoseismic history. The data provided in this data release were processed by PCMSC for these research studies. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. These data can be used with geographic information systems or other software to identify bathymetric features. These data are not intended to be used for navigation.

The NOAA survey vessel Fairweather was outfitted with an Applanix POS-MV position and motion compensation system. This system has post-processed horizontal positional accuracy of about 0.1 m and roll and pitch accuracies of about 0.02 degrees (https://www.applanix.com/downloads/products/specs/posmv/POS-MV-WaveMaster-II.pdf). Accuracies of final products may be lower due to water depth and total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In 2017 and 2018 the NOAA survey vessel Fairweather mapped in and around Noyes Submarine Canyon in southeast Alaska using a Kongsberg EM-710 multibeam echosounder. USGS, PCMSC processed the bathymetry data post-cruise. The survey line files were imported into Caris HIPS and SIPS software (version 11) for processing. Post-processed Applanix POS-MV attitude data (SBET) were merged with each line file. Water column sound velocity data that was collected throughout the surveys was applied to the bathymetry data. The data were cleaned of obvious bad soundings and the soundings were gridded into one 30-m surface. The merged bathymetry grid was then exported as a TIFF file in UTM zone 8, WGS 84.
