Abstract:
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are reported for water samples collected from the San Lorenzo River water during the rainy seasons from 2015 to 2016. Samples were collected during 2-, 5- and close to 10 year flood events.
Purpose:
These data were collected and analyzed to determine possible concentration changes in contaminant load [polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)] in the San Lorenzo River during the wet seasons following a multi-year drought.

Agilent A/D ChemStation (version B.01) was used with Microsoft Windows XP Professional to acquire data. During data acquisition, all signals acquired by the analytical instrument are converted from analog signals to digital signals in the detector. The digital signal is transmitted to ChemStation electronically and stored in the signal data file. A data file comprises a group of files, by default stored in the subdirectory of the data folder with a .D extension.

Process_Description:
River water samples were collected using a US D-95 water sampler, which was lowered throughout the water column by hand from a bridge-box platform beneath a pedestrian bridge in Santa Cruz, California located roughly 2 km upstream from the river mouth. The sampler was strategically deployed using a hand-operated reel winch to maintain a constant transit rate during sampling. Depth-integrated samples for PAH analysis were collected in acid-cleaned, methanol-dichlormethane (1:1, v:v) rinsed 1-liter Teflon bottles using a 0.64-cm (0.25-in.) diameter nozzle. Samples from the Teflon US D-95 bottles were carefully transferred to 4.0 L amber glass bottles which were pre-cleaned for trace organic and trace element sampling (I-CHEM). Repetitive samples were combined to provide the 4.0-liter volume for the PAH analyses. Samples were immediately transported to the USGS laboratory in Santa Cruz, California, where 30 mL of HPLC-grade dichloromethane (DCM) was added to the amber glass containers and the amber bottles were capped and inverted. The bottles were stored at 20-degrees Celsius until extraction.
