This data release compiles element composition data for more than 600 deep-ocean mineral samples from more than 25 research cruises in the Pacific Ocean since 1979 that involved USGS researchers. Deep-ocean mineral sample types encompassed in this data release include ferromanganese crusts, manganese nodules, phosphorites, and hydrothermal minerals. This data release is comprised of both unpublished as well as previously published data and reports and includes analytical methods and instrument detection limits whenever available.
These data serve to expand the knowledge and statistics for deep ocean marine mineral occurrences and composition within the global ocean.

All geochemistry data were calibrated against certified reference materials. The instruments and techniques used to generate the geochemical data are included in the data table. Limits for each analyte's detection by an instrument are reported in the table. The value -8888 indicates that the measurement for an analyte was below the detection limit and the value -7777 indicates that the measurement for an analyte was above the detection limit. Values of -9999 for concentration attributes indicate that no analysis was performed. Values of -9999 for method and detection limit attributes indicate that no information was available.
No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted.
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Many samples do not have chemistry data because analyses were performed on representative samples only. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
A formal accuracy assessment of the horizontal positional information in the dataset has not been conducted. The horizontal accuracy was determined with the ship's GPS navigation, which is accurate to less than 5 m.
Depth information for samples was collected using ship sonar technology. Depth values were taken from cruise reports and publications (reference links provided). Average depth is reported for samples collected with a dredge. A formal accuracy assessment of the vertical positional information in the dataset has not been conducted.
