Title:
Inorganic compositional data for fine-grained Puget Sound sediment along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line, September 2015
Abstract:
Nearshore surface sediment was collected with a petit ponar grab sampler between April 22 and September 17, 2015, at five sites in Puget Sound, Washington. Four sites were adjacent to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line in urban and non-urban areas, and one site was in an urban area that was not adjacent to the rail line. Total and near-total major, minor, trace, and rare earth element contents of the <0.063 mm sediment fraction were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. These data accompany Takesue, R.K., and Campbell, P.L., 2019, Contaminant baselines and sediment provenance along the Puget Sound Energy Transport Corridor, 2015: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2018-1196, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20181196.

Who produced the data set?

  1. Who are the originators of the data set? (may include formal authors, digital compilers, and editors)
    • Renee K. Takesue
  2. Who also contributed to the data set?
Samples were submitted for compositional analysis to the Analytical Chemistry Project of the USGS Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center (CMERSC), jobs MRP-14487 and MRP-15043. A contract lab performed the analyses. CMERSC staff performed QA/QC checks.

Why was the data set created?

Baseline sedimentary contents of potentially toxic inorganic elements were assessed in marshes and embayments along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line in Puget Sound, Washington, in September 2015 prior to escalation of oil and coal transport through the region. In addition, distinctive geochemical characteristics, or signatures, distinguished volcanic- and non-volcanic sediment provenance.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 20-Feb-2016 (process 1 of 4)
Bulk sediment was oven-dried at 60 degrees Celsius, and disaggregated gently with a mortar and pestle to avoid changing grain sizes. Disaggregated sediment was dry-sieved through stainless steel sieves to obtain 2 grams of the <0.063 mm size fraction. Sieved 2-gram samples were sent to CMERSC for analysis.
    Date: 31-Jan-2019 (process 2 of 4)
The authorship of the accompanying USGS Open-File Report (OFR) listed in the Abstract was corrected and the publication date was changed from 2018 to 2019. The OFR report number itself did not change and remains as 2018-1196. No data were changed.
    Date: 19-Oct-2020 (process 3 of 4)
Edited metadata to add keywords section with USGS persistent identifier as theme keyword. No data were changed. Person who carried out this activity:

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
Digested rock reference materials were used to standardize the data. The percent recovery for all elements was within 15% of reference values for concentrations that were not less than five times the limit of detection.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
Garmin 78sc handheld GPS reported a horizontal accuracy of +/- 3 meters.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Near-total inorganic element contents were not determined in the sample Saltwater State Park-1 because there was insufficient material. Total inorganic mercury (Hg) contents were not determined in any of the five Saltwater State Park samples.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
Three consistency standards (internal reference materials) were processed and analyzed in a similar manner as unknown samples, and their results compared to defined values from repeated analyses since 2006. No elements had more than one consistency standard whose values exceeded the defined value by 15% or more.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?
