Geochemical and isotopic compositions were determined in stream sediment and parent rocks collected in April 2017 and June 2017 and in nearshore sediment collected bimonthly in sediment traps from May 2017 to June 2018 in the coastal zone and 12 drainages of southwest Puerto Rico: Rio Loco, Yauco, Guayanilla, Macana, Tallaboa, Matilde, Portugues, Bucana, Inabon, Jacaquas, Descalabrado, and Coamo. Geochemical compositional data include: a) total contents of major, minor, trace, and rare earth elements in the <0.063 mm-diameter fraction of terrestrial (n=53) and nearshore sediment (n=63) and powdered rocks (n=19) analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS); b) major oxide contents of stream sediment (n=46) and rocks (n=19) determined by wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WD-XRF); and c) total organic carbon and carbonate contents of stream (n=48) and nearshore (n=64) sediment determined coulometrically. Isotopic compositional data include: 1) strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) determined by thermal ionization mass spectrometry in the <0.063 mm-diameter fraction of select stream (n=50) and nearshore (n=40) sediment, and in all rocks; and 2) activities of the short-lived cosmogenic nuclides beryllium-7, cesium-137, and excess (unsupported) lead-210 determined by gamma spectrometry on bulk nearshore sediment (n=44). The percentage by weight of the <0.063 mm-diameter sediment fraction (percent fines), the median grain size, and the silt to clay ratio are reported for stream (n=48) and nearshore (n=64) sediments. These data accompany Takesue, R.K., Sherman, C., Ramirez, N.I., Reyes, A.O., Cheriton, O.M., Rios, R.V., and Storlazzi, C.D., 2021, Land-based sediment sources and transport to southwest Puerto Rico coral reefs after Hurricane Maria, May 2017 to June 2018: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, v. 59, p. 107476, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecss.2021.107476.
<purpose>Geochemical and isotopic compositions of terrestrial sediment and parent rocks show the source, fate, and timing of runoff from southwest Puerto Rico watersheds to nearshore coral reefs. Sample collection for the study spanned pre- and post-hurricane conditions in the coastal region associated with Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017. Knowledge about terrestrial runoff sources can identify watershed where restoration and erosion control activities are most needed.</purpose>

<attraccr>For major oxides, elemental compositions, and strontium isotopes, rock reference materials were used to assess accuracy of the data. The percent recoveries for all oxides and elements were within 15% of reference values for concentrations that were five times the limit of detection or higher. Strontium isotope ratios were within 0.0006% of the reference value. For short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides, sample activities were calculated by comparison to reference standards with the same geometry and counting time; reported uncertainties include 1 standard deviation counting errors, detector efficiency, and background corrections. For grain size analyses, duplicates analyzed every 20 samples were within 15% of original values. Carbon analyses were run in duplicate and averaged.</attraccr>

<procdesc>GRAIN-SIZE DISTRIBUTION: Sediment grain-size distributions were determined at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center sediment laboratory. To remove organic material, 10 milliliters of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide were added to 20 grams of sediment. The sample was heated to 250 degrees Celsius to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide and was placed in an ultrasonic bath to liberate the <0.063 millimeter-diameter (fine) fraction. The sample was centrifuged for 1.5 hours in deionized water to remove soluble salts. Samples were funneled through 2 millimeter- and 0.063 millimeter-diameter mesh sieves to separate gravel-sized (greater than 2 millimeter), sand-sized (0.063 to 2 millimeter), and mud-sized (<0.063 millimeter) particles. The sand and gravel fractions were dried at 80 degrees Celsius and weighed. Five milliliters of sodium hexametaphosphate was added to the mud fraction and a 20-milliliter aliquot was taken from a 1 liter graduated cylinder to determine the weight of the mud. Particle size distributions of mud and sand were analyzed separately using a Beckman Coulter Counter (LS 13 320). Gravel particle sizes were analyzed by dry sieving. The gravel, sand, and mud fractional weights were integrated into a single grain-size distribution for each sample. Grain size statistical parameters were calculated according to Folk and Ward (1957).</procdesc>

Approximately 1 gram of sediment was dried overnight at 80 degrees Celsius and pulverized by hand in a mortar and pestle. TC was determined by incineration at 950 degrees Celsius (UIC CM 5200 furnace) of 20 milligrams of dry sediment loaded into in foil capsules. TIC was determined by perchloric acid digestion (UIC CM 5130 acid digester) of 20 milligrams of dry sediment. TOC was calculated as the difference between TC and TIC. The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content of sediment in weight percent was determined by multiplying TIC by 8.333, the mass ratio of CaCO3 to carbon.</procdesc>
