Description:
Abstract:
Tidal water discharge within two breaches constructed in a former flood-control levee of a restored agricultural area in Port Susan, Washington, was measured repeatedly during several tidal cycles. Measurements were made on March 27, 2014, April 16, 2014, May 18, 2014, and May 29, 2014 at breach PSB1, and on May 29, 2014 at breach PSB2. These data were collected using a boat-mounted Teledyne RDI RiverRay 600 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) or a Teledyne RDI StreamPro 2000 kHz ADCP, depending on date. ADCP transect data were collected and initially reviewed using WinRiver II software and reprocessing and final review was completed with QRev software.
Purpose:
Observations were collected as part of the USGS Coastal Habitats in Puget Sound Project to characterize sediment fluxes in a recently restored agricultural area. An area of approximately 61 ha near the mouth of the Stillaguamish River was reconnected to tidal flow via levee breaches as part of a larger restoration effort. These data help assess the success of the restoration effort from a hydrodynamics and sediment-transport perspective.

Process_Description:
Discharge data were collected using a boat-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in breaches in the former flood control levee at a restored agricultural area in Port Susan, Washington. Measurements were made on March 27, 2014, April 16, 2014, May 18, 2014, and May 29, 2014 at breach PSB1, and on May 29, 2014 at breach PSB2. Either a Teledyne RDI StreamPro 2000 kHz ADCP (May 18, 2014) or a Teledyne RDI RiverRay 600 kHz ADCP (all other dates) was used. The boat repeatedly traversed each breach from one bank to the other, collecting data during each transect crossing. ADCP data were recorded and initially reviewed using WinRiver II version 2.11.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Data were post-processed using QRev 3.43, a program developed by the USGS Office of Surface Water (Mueller, 2016) to compute moving-boat ADCP discharge. QRev automates data-quality checks, data filtering, extrapolation methods, and invalid-data-handling steps, and provides estimates of uncertainty to help guide the user. QRev is available at https://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/movingboat/QRev.shtml. Processing in QRev adhered to the defaults, except that in-situ salinity values were applied to compute speed of sound. Data were exported from QRev using bottom-track (BT) navigation reference.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This dataset consists of discharge measurements collected using a Teledyne RD Instruments RiverRay ADCP. All data were collected with Teledyne RD Instruments WinRiver II version 2.11 and processed with QRev version 3.43 (Mueller, 2016). These data are available in 1) their original raw data format which can be opened and processed in either WinRiver II or QRev and 2) their processed format which can be opened and processed by QRev or opened by Matlab or any software that can read Matlab formatted files. Both WinRiver II and QRev are distributed free.
The WinRiver II files consist of:
1. .mmt file: XML configuration file used by WinRiver II for setup, specific measurement data entry, and filenames of the raw transect data files (pd0)
2. .pd0 files: raw binary data collected by WinRiver II.
The QRev files consist of:
1. .mat files: saved data processed by QRev. These files can be opened and processed by QRev or loaded into Matlab or software that can read Matlab formatted files. The variable definitions are documented in Mueller (2016).
2. .xml: summaries of the data processed by QRev. The variable definitions are documented in Mueller (2016). The primary variables used in the index-velocity computation are the total discharge, located in Channel:Transect:Discharge:Total, and the channel cross-sectional area, located in Channel:Transect:Other:Area.
Data are organized in the following folders:
1217PSB1_0: March 27, 2014 (breach PSB1) 1217PSB1_3: April 16, 2014 (breach PSB1) 1217PSB1_1: May 18, 2014 (breach PSB1) 1217PSB1_4: May 29, 2014 (breaches PSB1 and PSB2)
QRev files in 1217PSB1_4 corresponding to PSB1 contain _PSB1_ in their filename; those corresponding to PSB2 have _PSB2_ in their filename.
