Title: San Juan, Puerto Rico, wave and water level data, 2018-2019
Abstract:
Time series data of water surface elevation and wave height were acquired at ten locations for 153 days off San Juan, on the north coast of Puerto Rico, in support of a study on the transformation of surface waves and resulting water levels over the coral reefs. The relative placement of sensors on the reefs were as follows: PRI18E01, PRI18W01 – fore reef PRI18E02, PRI18W02 – reef crest PRI18E03, PRI18W03 – outer reef flat PRI18E04, PRI18W04 – middle reef flat PRI18E05, PRI18W05 – inner reef flat PRI18E06 – lagoon PRI18E07 – near-shore

Why was the data set created?

The continuous measurements of waves, currents, tides from these instrument deployments, provide information the variability in these hydrodynamic properties over the coral reefs of Puerto Rico. These data will be used to study the transformation of waves and resulting water levels over the reef.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 15-Apr-2019 (process 1 of 5)
Data were accumulated into NetCDF files. During post-processing, data collected when instruments were out of the water, and data degraded by biological fouling, were removed from the time series. Bad data points were identified by 1) the deployment and recovery times, and 2) pressure readings equal to or less than 3 cm of water.
    Date: 15-Apr-2019 (process 2 of 5)
Files are named with a convention that uses a 13-digit alpha-numeric code. The first three characters for this dataset are all 'PRI' for the experiment name; the fourth and fifth positions represent the calendar year in which the first data point in the file was taken (18, 2018); the sixth, seventh and eighth characters are an alphanumeric code for the site name (E01, W01 etc.); the ninth and tenth characters represent the instrument position on the platform, where 01 is the top-most. Next is a two or three-character code for data type (rbr, RBR Wave Gauge; aw, Nortek AWAC Wave Gauge). The suffix of ‘-b’ indicates that these are the raw burst data. Additional information regarding the relative placement of instruments on the reef for the given deployment was added to the Abstract/Summary. No PRI18 data were changed. In addition, Version 2.0 was added to the Larger Work citation of the metadata due to additional datasets being added to the overall data release.
