This part of DS 781 presents data for the habitat map of the Offshore of Gaviota Map Area, California. The vector data file is included in "Habitat_OffshoreGaviota.zip," which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.5066/F7TH8JWJ. These data accompany the pamphlet and map sheets of Johnson, S.Y., Dartnell, P., Cochrane, G.R., Hartwell, S.R., Golden, N.E., Kvitek, R.G., and Davenport, C.W. (S.Y. Johnson and S.A. Cochran, eds.), 2018, California State Waters Map Series—Offshore of Gaviota, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2018–1023, pamphlet 41 p., 9 sheets, scale 1:24,000, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20181023.
This map shows physical marine benthic habitats in the Offshore of Gaviota map area. Marine benthic habitats represent a particular type of water quality, substrate, geomorphology, seafloor process, or any other attribute that may provide a habitat for a specific species or an assemblage of organisms. Marine benthic habitats are classified using the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS), developed by representatives from a consortium of federal agencies. CMECS is the U.S. government standard for marine habitat characterization. The standard provides an ecologically relevant structure for biologic, geologic, chemical, and physical habitat attributes. This map illustrates the geoform and substrate components of the standard. This map was derived from geologic and geomorphic map units by translation of the unit description into the best-fit values of CMECS classes. The CMECS classes are documented at https://www.fgdc.gov/standards/projects/FGDC-standards-projects/cmecs-folder/CMECS_Version_06-2012_FINAL.pdf.
      <purpose>This work is of potential marine benthic habitat maps characterized after Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS). These maps will be interpreted from Bathymetry and backscatter sonar data collected along the coast of central California. This information is not intended for navigational purposes.</purpose>

      <horizpa>
        <horizpar>Polygons were primarily mapped by (1) interpretation of 1-meter-resolution hillshaded bathymetry data from bathymetric lidar and sonar surveys; (2) interpretation of 1-meter-resolution amplitude (backscatter) data from bathymetric sonar surveys; or (3) interpretation of 1-meter interpretation of seismic-reflection-profile data. Map Unit contact locations were interpreted typically at a scale of between 1:1,000 and 1:2,000 using the above base data. Bathymetric sonar and lidar data have a horizontal accuracy greater than the resolution of the base data. Map unit contacts were digitized by heads-up screen digitization of line data on 1-meter-resolution DEMs described above. Horizontal accuracy is estimated to be 2 meters depending on how clearly contacts can be resolved. Most digitized positions on the map are estimated to have better than 5 m horizontal accuracy. There is no elevation data in the database.</horizpar>

    <techpreq>The downloadable data file has been compressed with the "zip" command and can be unzipped with Winzip (or other tool) on Windows systems. To utilize these data, the user must have software capable of uncompressing the WinZip file and importing and viewing an Esri ArcMap TIFF. Users should download the ArcGIS Project File, OffshoreGaviotaGIS.mxd.zip, a compressed (with the "zip" command) version of the ArcMap document (.mxd) that has all the data layers loaded in the table of contents for "Offshore Gaviota" and has all the data symbolized as on the OFR map sheets. Download and save this ArcGIS project file, including all data layers, to the directory the user has created for this GIS.</techpreq>
