Stream Flooding Hazard Intensity Level in the coastal zone of Maui,
Hawaii
The purpose of this dataset is to provide, in digital
format, the information included in the technical hazard
maps published in the 'Atlas of Natural Hazards in the
Hawaiian Coastal Zone' (Fletcher etal. 2002) for use by
citizens, scientists, and regulatory agencies.
Data included here were derived from the technical hazard
maps published in the 'Atlas of Natural Hazards in the
Hawaiian Coastal Zone' (Fletcher etal. 2002) The atlas
reports on a program of research that assigns a relative
ranking scale to seven natural coastal hazards. The
ranking is based on the historical trends and natural
factors influencing site vulnerability and hazard intensity
in the Hawaiian coastal zone.
Information contained within the Atlas is largely based
on previous investigations by scientific and engineering
researchers and county, state, and federal offices and
agencies. The unique aspect of this report is that, to the
extent possible, it assimilates prior efforts in documenting
Hawaiian coastal hazards and combines existing knowledge into
a single comprehensive coastal hazard data set. It is by no
means the final word on coastal hazards in Hawaii. Every
hazardous phenomenon described, and others such as slope
failure and rocky shoreline collapse, need to be more
carefully quantified, forecast, and mitigated.
The technical hazard maps were constructed for the entire
shorelines of the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai,
Maui, and Hawaii at a scale of 1:50,000 (1 inch on the map
equals approximately 0.8 miles). The technical map series
displays the nominal relative intensity (on a ranked scale
of 1 to 4, where 4 is most intense; overall hazard assessment
is on a ranked scale of 1 to 7, where 7 is most intense) of
each of the seven hazards following a set of specific
definitions.

All attributes created during the creation process were
verified by displaying the lines in both the database and
the spatial coverage, but no formal tests were performed.
These data are believed to be logically consistent, though
no tests were performed. Line geometry is topologically clean.

The original data used to create this shapefile was
converted to an ARCVIEW polyline shapefile from an
ARC/INFO .e00 coverage of the Hawaiin islands distributed
by the State of Hawaii via the web. The line file was
subset into seperate lines for each island, and the
topology was then "cleaned up" using an ESRI sample
script. The line was then dynamically segmented according
to the exisiting coastal hazard atlas.
