Description:
Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducts baseline and storm-response photography missions to document and understand the changes in the vulnerability of the Nation's coasts to extreme storms. On September 26-27, 2006, the USGS conducted an oblique aerial photographic survey from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Breton Island, Louisiana, aboard a U.S. Coast Guard HH60 Helicopter aircraft at an altitude of 500 feet (ft) and approximately 1,200 ft offshore. This mission was conducted to collect data for assessing incremental changes in the beach and nearshore area since the last survey, which was flown in June 2006 (https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=06ACH02) and the data can be used to assess future coastal change. The photographs provided are Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) images. The photograph locations are an estimate of the aircraft's position and do not indicate the location of the features in the images. These photographs document the configuration of the barrier islands and other coastal features at the time of the survey. ExifTool (version 4.0) was used to add the following to the header of each photograph: time of collection, GPS latitude, GPS longitude, keywords, credit, artist (photographer), caption, copyright, and contact information. Photographs can be opened with any JPEG-compatible image viewer. All image times are recorded in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Purpose:
To provide access to digital photographs taken as part of the September 26-27, 2006, baseline oblique aerial survey collected along the coast from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Breton Island, Louisiana, and to provide access to attribute data that documents the time and location where each photograph was taken.
Supplemental_Information:
For a summary of field activity 06ACH03 please see https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=06ACH03. Bounding coordinates for the oblique aerial survey are derived from the overall flight path found in the GPS data. Ancillary files included in this publication are: 06ACH03-LocationMaps.zip, 06ACH03-ProcessedNav.zip, 06ACH03-SupplementalFiles.zip, and 06ACH03-RawGPSNav.zip; in addition to the digital oblique aerial image zip files.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Best attempts were made to set the camera to UTC time on the GPS receivers at the beginning of each flight. The clock of the Compix Titler unit was also set to UTC at the same time. Human error during transcription of geographic position and time from the video is possible; however, no obvious errors were observed. Latitude, longitude, and time were collected at an interval of approximately once per second. Note: Latitude and longitude positions in this data release refer to the position of the aircraft, not the position of the landmarks photographed. Refer to the Process Steps below for more detail.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data presented here include the digitally collected photographs in JPEG format with the Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) header embedded with the individual photograph's location along the flight path of the baseline coastal oblique aerial photographic survey of the coast, taken from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Breton Island, Louisiana. This mission was flown on September 26-27, 2006, aboard a U.S. Coast Guard HH60 Helicopter aircraft, tail number HH6031. Crew members of the USGS in St. Petersburg, FL, included Karen L.M. Morgan, M. Dennis Krohn, and Phil Thompson; and Lt. John Mixon (pilot), Lt. Chris Conley (Co-pilot), and AMT3 Petty Officer Chris Walker (Flight Mechanic) of the U.S. Coast Guard. The GPS receiver used to provide navigation to the video titler unit was a Garmin GPS 18 PC, WAAS Enabled, which is accurate to within 15 meters. Still photography was collected along the coast during this survey. Data Collection Interval: 1 Second. Data File Format: Native Fugawi and Text; Number of files created: 2. Computer/Software: Computer: Panasonic Toughbook CF-51. Software: Fugawi Marine ENC, Ver. 4 GPS Navigation Software. The GPS unit was used to record navigation fixes of the aircraft, not the position of the features imaged.
Completeness_Report:
This dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract section. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
An attempt was made to keep the same relative distance between the aircraft and the beach in order to maintain a constant field of view.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 15
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
Garmin GPS 18 PC accuracy is based on manufacturer specifications when available. During post-processing, the camera time was matched to the GPS time/position to determine camera location at the time of image collection. Latitude and longitude positions in this data release refer to the position of the aircraft, not the position of the landmarks photographed.

Process_Description:
Image Acquisition: Images were taken with a Nikon D1X digital camera and written to the hard drive of a computer. Image size is approximately 6 MP and saved in Nikon Electronic File (NEF) format (not included in this report). Images were saved using the filename format yyyy_mmdd_hhmmssd.jpg (where the "d" signifies digital acquisition using the D1X). The names provide information about the photograph's year, month, day, hour, minute, and second. For example, image 2006_0926_133636d.jpg was taken September 26, 2006, at 13:36:36 UTC. Best attempts were made to set the D1X's internal clock to within 1 second of UTC at the beginning of the flight. Video and still photography were shot out of the rear starboard window of the airplane. The video files are not included in this publication.
