Description:
Abstract:
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is studying the effects of climate change on ocean acidification within the Gulf of Mexico; dealing specifically with the effect of ocean acidification on marine organisms and habitats. To investigate this, the USGS participated in cruises on the West Florida Shelf and northern Gulf of Mexico regions aboard the research vessel (R/V) Weatherbird II or Bellows, ships of opportunity led by Dr. Kendra Daly, of the University of South Florida (USF) in July and August, 2013. Cruises left from and returned to Saint Petersburg, Florida, but followed different routes. The USGS collected geochemical data pertaining to pH, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), and total alkalinity (TA) in discrete samples at various depths from predetermined stations. Discrete surface samples were also taken, while in transit, during both cruises.
Purpose:
Discrete water samples were collected underway and at stations. Water samples were analyzed at the USGS geochemistry laboratory in St. Petersburg, Florida. Data were collected during USGS field activity number (FAN) 13BHM01 and 13BHM02; additional survey details are available at http://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/. This data release contains data for two benthic habitat cruises conducted in 2013: 13BHM01, July 8-12 (R/V Bellows) and 13BHM02, August 5-11 (R/V Weatherbird II).
Supplemental_Information:
The USGS Saint Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC) - St. Petersburg, FL, assigns a unique identifier to each cruise or field activity. For example, 13BHM01 indicates the data were collected in 2013 for Benthic Habitat Mapping and the data were collected during the first field activity for that project in that calendar year.

Process_Description:
During each cruise, a 12-bottle rosette with YSI 6600 conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sonde was deployed to various depths, at predetermined, specific sample locations (stations). On the downcast, a profile for the water column was recorded and the information was used to determine sample locations on the upcast. Samples were generally taken at the bottom, middle, and top of the station. Occasionally samples were taken at the chlorophyll maximum, as well as depths above and below. Samples were transported to the USGS Carbon Chemistry Laboratory in St. Petersburg, Florida or Dr. Robert Byrne's Laboratory at USF. Total alkalinity samples were analyzed with a custom automatic titration system consisting of either a USB-4000 or USB-2000 fiber optic spectrometer (Ocean Optics, Inc. USA), a 665 Dosimat auto-titrator with stir plate, and a purging system with high-purity N2 gas following the methods of Yao and Byrne (1998). Total carbon was analyzed using a CM5014 CO2 coulometer (UIC, Inc., USA) with Model CM5130 Acidification Modules following the coulometric methods of Dickson and others (2007). Precision for these methods was better than ± 2 micromole per kilogram (mol/kg) for TA and TCO2.

Process_Description:
Discrete station sample data from both surveys were entered into a spreadsheet and merged with other data sources including: GPS from the ship, salinity and temperature from the CTD, as well as the lab results of total alkalinity and disolved inorganic carbon from the USGS St. Petersburg Carbon Analytical Laboratory. Processed files were saved in Comma Seperated Values (.csv) and Microsoft Excel Workbook (.xlsx) formats.
