To investigate this, the USGS participated in cruises on the West Florida Shelf and northern Gulf of Mexico regions aboard the research vessel (R/V) Weatherbird II or Bellows, ships of opportunity led by Dr. Kendra Daly, of the University of South Florida (USF) in July and August, 2013. Cruises left from and returned to Saint Petersburg, Florida, but followed different routes. The USGS collected geochemical data pertaining to pH, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), and total alkalinity (TA) in discrete samples at various depths from predetermined stations. Discrete surface samples were also taken, while in transit, during both cruises. Purpose: Discrete water samples were collected underway and at stations. Water samples were analyzed at the USGS geochemistry laboratory in St. Petersburg, Florida. Data were collected during USGS field activity number (FAN) 13BHM01 and 13BHM02; additional survey details are available at http://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/. This data release contains data for two benthic habitat cruises conducted in 2013: 13BHM01, July 8-12 (R/V Bellows) and 13BHM02, August 5-11 (R/V Weatherbird II). Supplemental_Information: The USGS Saint Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC) - St. Petersburg, FL, assigns a unique identifier to each cruise or field activity. For example, 13BHM01 indicates the data were collected in 2013 for Benthic Habitat Mapping and the data were collected during the first field activity for that project in that calendar year. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: A YSI 6600 multi-parameter sonde coupled with a YSI 650 Multi-Parameter Display System (MDS) was deployed to provide temperature and salinity values for water chemistry calculations during the August cruise; seawater scale pH values were also recorded. The sonde was located in the wet lab of the R/V Weatherbird II and was attached to a seawater flow-through system that siphoned water from approximately four feet below the water surface. The flow rate varied with weather condition and measurements were stopped in six foot and higher seas. Data values were logged at 5-minute intervals. The ship's cruising speed was 9 knots. Process_Date: 2013 Process_Step: Process_Description: Data was exported from the YSI 650 MDS and converted to comma delimited file (CDF) within EcoWatch software. These data were imported into Microsoft Excel and formatted into a single spreadsheet. GPS data, with latitude/longitude, were joined to water parameters using time and date stamps.
