Abstract:
As part of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring (BICM) Program, scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center conducted a single-beam bathymetry survey around the Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana in June 2015. The goal of the program is to provide long-term data on Louisiana’s barrier islands and use this data to plan, design, evaluate, and maintain current and future barrier island restoration projects. The data described in this report, along with USGS bathymetry data collected in 2013 as a part of the Barrier Island Evolution Research project covering the northern Chandeleur Islands, and data collected in 2014 in collaboration with the Louisiana CPRA Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring project around Breton Island, will be used to assess bathymetric change since 2006-2007 and serve as a bathymetric control in supporting modeling future changes in response to restoration and storm impacts. The survey area encompasses approximately 435 square kilometers (km2) of nearshore and back-barrier environments around Hewes Point, the Chandeleur Islands, and Curlew and Grand Gosier Shoals. This Data Series serves as an archive of processed single-beam bathymetry data, collected in the nearshore of the Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana from June 17-24, 2015 during USGS Field Activity Number (FAN) 2015-317-FA. Geographic information system data products include: a 200 meter-cell-size interpolated bathymetry grid, trackline maps, and xyz point data files. Additional files include error analysis maps, Field Activity Collection System logs, and formal Federal Geographic Data Committee metadata.
Purpose:
This zip file contains Esri trackline vector files for all single-beam bathymetry data collected during FAN 2015-317-FA, which encompasses data from three separate survey platforms; the R/V Sallenger (15BIM01), R/V Jabba Jaw (15BIM02), and R/V Chum (15BIM03).
Supplemental_Information:
Trackline files were recorded during the survey using HYPACK version 14.0.9.47 (15BIM01, 15BIM02) and 13.0.09.17 (15BIM03) marine surveying, positioning, and navigation software. Within this document all platforms will be distinguished by FAN (15BIM01-R/V Sallenger, 15BIM02-R/V Jabba Jaw,15BIM03-R/V Chum) as separate but similar entities as all data are acquired, processed, and presented as a whole.

An Ashtech GPS receiver on all survey platforms recorded the 12-channel full-carrier-phase positioning signals (L1/L2) from satellites via a Thales choke-ring antenna (15BIM01,15BIM02) and from smaller Global Ashtech Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) antennas (15BIM03). The manufacturer's stated accuracy of the post processed kinematic GPS data is +/- 1 centimeter (cm) in the Horizontal plane.

Acquisition: The trackline positions for USGS Cruise 2015-317-FA were acquired using Ashtech Proflex GPS receiver units streaming position data to the hydrographic software, HYPACK®, a marine surveying, positioning, and navigation software package that managed planned line information and provided real-time navigation, steering, correction, data quality, and instrumentation-status information to the boat operator (HYPACK® version 14.0.9.47 for 15BIM01, 15BIM02 and version 13.0.09.17 for 15BIM03 respectively). All platforms were equipped with Ashtech Proflex GPS receivers recording 12-channel full-carrier-phase positioning signals (L1/L2) from satellites via Thales Choke-ring antennas (15BIM01, 15BIM02) and smaller Ashtech Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) antenna (15BIM03). All navigation information was saved into a single raw data file (.raw) in HYPACK®, with each device string referenced by a device identification code and time stamped to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Processing/Shape file creation: The trackline vector file was created in Esri ArcGIS version 10.2.2.3552 using the XTools Pro extension, version 11.0 build 1328. The trackline shapefile was created from the x,y,z point data shapefile, using the XTools' feature conversion tool, "make polylines from points". Within XTools' feature conversion selection window, the following items were selected. The "group by field selection" was set to use the HYPACK line name attribute and the "input feature order - order by field" was set to use the FID attribute. The resultant polyline shapefile was then projected in WGS84 Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 16 North.
