Description:

Abstract:

The 2015 Mississippi coastal shorelines were originally extracted from 2015 Landsat imagery and published within United States Geological Survey (USGS) Open-File Report (OFR) 2015-1179 (https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20151179). Shoreline files for Ship, Horn, and Petit Bois Islands were merged to a single shapefile and spatially adjusted using 2015/2016 USGS bathymetric survey tracklines (Dewitt and others, 2017) to more closely match island shoreline positions during USGS surveys.

Purpose:

The 2015 shoreline files created for this study (2015_shoreline_ShipHorn.shp) was used as a clipping feature in creating the 2016 bathymetric triangular irregular network (TIN) and, therefore, included in the final digital elevation model (DEM) (2016_MS_NAD83NAVD88g12B_50m.tif) and 2016 bathymetric change maps (2016minus1916to1920_MS_NAD83NAVD88g12B_50m.tif and 2016minus2008to2009_MS_NAD83NAVD88g12B_50m.tif) within this data release.).

Supplemental_Information:

The 2015 shoreline file is relative to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone 16N North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) horizontal datum and North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) GEOID12B vertical datum.

Additionally, the 2015 shoreline was manually adjusted using the 2016 USGS bathymetric survey trackline positions (Flocks and others, 2018, DeWitt and others, 2017) to better represent the shoreline position during the 2016 bathymetry survey.

The published 2015 Ship, Horn, and Petit Bois (western shoal only) shorelines were used to create the modified 2016 shoreline. Published 2015 shorelines used to create the shoreline used in this study are dated 05/13/2015 for Ship Island, 04/21/2015 for Horn Island, and 05/23/2015 for the western shoal of Petit Bois Island.

Using the 2016 USGS bathymetric survey coverage as a guide (Dewitt and others, 2017), and assuming this bathymetric dataset spatially defines the subaerial extent of the nearshore, previously published 2015 shorelines (USGS OFR 2015-1179) for Ship Island (dated 05/13/2015), Horn Island (04/21/2015), and the western shoal of Petit Bois Island (05/23/2015) were manually adjusted landward to more closely represent island coverage during the 2016 bathymetric survey. The largest of this applied shift was approximately 70 m; however, most often the adjusted difference was less than 25 m.
