Abstract:
As a part of the Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring Program (BICM), scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center conducted a nearshore single-beam bathymetry survey along the Chenier Plain, Louisiana from Marsh Island to Sabine Pass. The goal of the BICM program is to provide long-term data on Louisiana’s coastline and use this data to plan, design, evaluate, and maintain current and future barrier island restoration projects. The data described in this metadata record will provide baseline bathymetric information for future research investigating island evolution, sediment transport, recent- and long-term geomorphic change and will support modeling of future changes in response to restoration and storm impacts. Over 3,300-line kilometers of single-beam data were acquired during two field missions: USGS Field Activity numbers (FAN) 2017-323-FA, conducted June 2-14, and 2017-324-FA, which occurred July 8-16, 2017 aboard four separate survey vessels. The final x,y,z data are provided in the native World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) G1150 acquisition format (which is equivalent to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2000 [ITRF00]), with values ranging from -26.62 m to -68.94 m ellipsoid height, as well as the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) reference frame and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) GEOID12A , with values ranging from 0.00 to -30.13 m.
Purpose:
This zip file, Chenier_Plain_2017_SBB_ITRF00_Tracklines.zip, contains Esri trackline vector files for all single-beam bathymetry data collected during two field surveys: Field Activity Numbers (FAN) 2017-323-FA and 2017-324-FA, which encompass data from four separate survey platforms; the R/V Sallenger (17BIM01, 17BIM05), RV Jabba Jaw (17BIM02, 17BIM07), RV Shark (17BIM03, 17BIM07) and the RV Chum (17BIM04, 17BIM08), during the 2017 Chenier Plain survey. Trackline files were recorded during the survey, using HYPACK version 16.1.8.0 marine surveying, positioning, and navigation software. For the single-beam bathymetry, the differential global positioning system (DGPS) data were obtained through post processing the base station data to the rover data. This dataset was transformed from the initial ITRF00 datum to NAD83 using the GEOID12A model (NOAA NGS VDatum software version 3.2 - http://vdatum.noaa.gov/).

An Ashtech GPS receiver on all survey platforms recorded the 12-channel full-carrier-phase positioning signals (L1/L2) from satellites via a Thales choke-ring antenna (17BIM01, 17BIM02, 17BIM05, 17BIM06) and from smaller Ashtech Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) antennas (17BIM03, 17BIM04, 17BIM07, 17BIM08). Acquisition: The trackline positions for USGS field activities 2017-323-FA and 2017-324-FA were acquired using Ashtech Proflex GPS receiver units streaming position data to the hydrographic software, HYPACK®, a marine surveying, positioning, and navigation software package that managed planned line information and provided real-time navigation, steering, correction, data quality, and instrumentation-status information to the boat operator (HYPACK® version 16.1.8.0). All platforms were equipped with Ashtech Proflex GPS receivers recording 12-channel full-carrier-phase positioning signals (L1/L2) from satellites via Thales Choke-ring antennas (17BIM01, 17BIM02, 17BIM05, 17BIM06) and from smaller Ashtech Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) antennas (17BIM03, 17BIM04, 17BIM07, 17BIM08). All navigation information was saved into a single raw data file (.raw) in HYPACK®, with each device string referenced by a device identification code and time stamped to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Processing/Shapefile creation: The vector digital dataset (polyline) of the 2017 Chenier Plain survey tracklines was created in Esri ArcGIS version 10.3.1 using the XTools Pro extension, version 12.2 build 2197. The trackline shapefile was created from the post processed x,y,z point data shapefile for each vessel (please see Chenier_Plain_2017_SBB_XYZ_Metadata.txt) using the XTools' feature conversion tool, "make polylines from points". Within XTools' feature conversion selection window, the following items were selected: "group by field selection" was set to use the attribute HypackLine, and the "input feature order - order by field" was set to use the FID attribute. The individual vessel trackline files were then merged to create a comprehensive trackline file. Tracklines are provided in the native format of WGS84 (G1150) ITRF00.
