This study builds on Smith and others (2020b) and includes datasets collected after the installation of a living shoreline (a subtidal sill [artificial reef]) that was completed in May 2021. Each marsh site consisted of five plots located along a transect perpendicular to the marsh-estuary shoreline at 5-meter (m) increments (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 m from the shoreline). Each plot contained three to six net sedimentation tiles (NST) that were secured flush to the marsh surface using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe. NST are an inexpensive and simple tool to assess short- and long-term deposition that can be deployed in highly dynamic environments without the compaction associated with traditional coring methods. The NST were deployed for three-month sampling periods, measuring sediment deposition from August 2021 to January 2023. Sediment deposited on the NST were processed to determine physical characteristics, such as deposition thickness, volume, wet weight/dry weight, grain size, and organic content (via loss-on-ignition [LOI]). For select sampling periods, ancillary data (water level, elevation, and vegetation) are also provided in this data release. The estuarine sites consisted of Site 8S (shallow; landward of the subtidal sill), 8D (deep; seaward side of the subtidal sill), as well as 9S and 9D (both sites established adjacent to 8S/8D and the subtidal sill). During select trips water parameters (e.g., waves, water level, and turbidity) were collected at each estuarine site to collect turbidity and wave data. Data presented in this data release were collected under three USGS Field Activities Numbers (FAN; one FAN per year) during thirteen sampling trips (alternate FAN; each sampling trip was assigned a unique alt FAN under the main FAN): 2021-320-FA (21CCT01, 21CCT03, 21CCT04, 21CCT05), 2022-302-FA (22CCT01, 22CCT02, 22CCT03, 22CCT04, 22CCT05, 22CCT06, 22CCT07, 22CCT08) and 2023-301-FA (23CCT01), however, every trip does not contain all data types. This data release also contains data for 2020-323-FA (20CCT02) that was collected as a special collection trip for Hurricane Delta. This data was collected before the subtidal sill was installed and is being published with this data release since pre-subtidal sill data was already published. Additional survey and data details are available from the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) at, https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/. Users can look up USGS FANs in the CMGDS by replacing the FAN in the following url: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/services/activity.php?fan=2022-302-FA. Data from a related NST study in the GNDNERR (Middle Bay and North Rigolets) can be found in Smith and others (2020a). Data collected from before the living shoreline (subtidal sill) installation can be found in Smith and others (2020b). For additional information on data processing and analysis, refer to the accompanying journal publication Smith and others (2025). Please read the full metadata for details on data collection, dataset variables, and data quality. Purpose: This dataset includes water level measurements obtained, during USGS Field Activity Numbers (FAN) 2021-320-FA (21CCT03, 21CCT05), 2022-302-FA (22CCT01, 22CCT03, 22CCT05, 22CCT07) and 2023-301-FA (23CCT01), from In-Situ Rugged TROLL 100 data loggers located at five net sedimentation tile (NST) sites (Sites 5-9). During the 21CCT03 and 23CCT01 trips, loggers were only deployed at four sites (5-8). One logger was deployed at each site in the estuary within 5 meters of the shoreline. See the GB_Elevation_Data_2020_2023.zip folder of this data release for exact location and elevation information. Barometric data was concurrently collected during all water level collection periods by an In-Situ Rugged BaroTROLL data logger (henceforth called BaroTROLL) at the GNDNERR office. Water level data are used to calibrate against National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tide gages to help facilitate a better understanding of tidal range, hydrodynamic fluctuations, and marsh flooding. Supplemental_Information: USGS scientists collected water level from Grand Bay, Mississippi, during a total of seven surveys. Each field visit was assigned a FAN and alternate FAN (Alt-FAN) by the USGS. This publication contains data for field activities from: 2021-320-FA (21CCT03, August 2021-September 2021; 21CCT05, October 2021-December 2021), 2022-302-FA (22CCT01, December 2022-February 2022; 22CCT03, February 2022-May 2022; 22CCT05, May 2022-August 2022; 22CCT07, August 2022-November 2022) and 2023-301-FA (23CCT01, November 2023-February 2023). Published data is related to barometric pressure, water temperature, uncorrected water level, water levels corrected using NOAA data, and water level corrected using real time kinematic (RTK) global positioning service (GPS) data. Water level and barometric data are provided as comma-separated values (CSV) text file format and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) graphs. Also included in this release is a file called RuggedTROLL_sensor_info.csv that contains additional information about the sensor deployment and retrieval. Water level data in this data release may not match other published water level data due to differences with sensor placement, type, or other factors (sediment build-up in the well). Sensors were used with the factory calibration and were not manually calibrated by users. Throughout the year we routinely did sensor intercomparisons in a bucket of fresh water to ensure sensors were reading consistent measurements. Following each sensor retrieval, the data from all sites were compared to each other as well as near by tide gauges to ensure the data was reasonable. NOAA data was downloaded from the NOAA Tides and Currents website as processed water levels. To ensure consistency with previous USGS releases (Smith and others, 2020), uncorrected water level, RTK corrected water level, and NOAA-corrected water level were also included. Using R, the files were clipped to a date and time range closest to the deployment and retrieval date and times to preserve as much of the data as possible. As a result, the start and end of each file (data from the first or last 1-2 hours in each file) may contain data from when the sensor was acclimating to the water conditions. The erroneous data are often represented as null values (represented as "NA"). There were additional times when the senor failed to record due to a malfunction and are dispersed throughout the data as a singular events. These events are also often represented as Null values (represented as "NA"). For additional information on positional and elevation values and uncertainty see the GB_Elevation_Data_2020_2023.zip folder of this data release. For more information, please contact the authors or USGS SPCMSC data management contact listed in this metadata record. Logical_Consistency_Report: The data included in Grand_Bay_Water_Level_Data_2021_2023.zip contain water level measurements obtained during USGS Field Activity Numbers (FAN) 2021-320-FA (21CCT03, 21CCT05), 2022-302-FA (22CCT01, 22CCT03, 22CCT05, 22CCT07) and 2023-301-FA (23CCT01), from In-Situ Rugged TROLL 100 data loggers located at five net sedimentation tile (NST) sites (Sites 5-9). Barometric data was concurrently collected during all water level collection periods by a BaroTROLL data logger at the GNDNERR office. Completeness_Report: These data are the complete, uncorrected, and corrected water level data files for data collected within the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mississippi. Each trip includes water level data from Sites 5-9, with the exception of 21CCT03 and 23CCT01 where data was only collected at Sites 5-8. Data after deployment (data from the first 1-2 hours in each file) may contain data while loggers were collecting values but were still acclimating to the water conditions. Data represented as null values (represented as "NA") are regarded as a sensor malfunction and no data exists for that date and time. Process_Step: Process_Description: In August 2021, four In-Situ Rugged TROLL 100 data loggers were used to record water levels and temperature at Sites 5 through 8 and one In-Situ Rugged BaroTROLL was used to record barometric pressure and air temperature nearby at the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GNDNERR) office. Starting in October 2021, Site 9 was established and a fifth well was installed. A 1.5-m long well (plastic wells wrapped in sand and a fine metal screen) was installed at each of the five study sites so approximately 0.5 m of the well was protruding from the estuary surface. Each well was installed in the estuary within 5 meters of the marsh shoreline. Before deployment, each sensor was programmed using the Win-Situ 5 software to record at a continuous 30-minute interval over the course of the 3-month deployment. At the start of each trip, the loggers were wrapped in a protective coating (plastic wrap, nylon stockings, and tape) and tied onto the well cap. Biofouling protections (plastic wrap, nylon stocking, and tape) were determined to have no impact on measurement accuracy after consultation with the manufacturer. Measurements of the string and logger length were collected for later post-processing of the data. The logger was slowly lowered into the well and the well cap was secured. The BaroTROLL was zip tied vertically to fence at the GNDNERR office roughly 3 feet off the ground. GPS position and elevation data were collected (using a real time kinematic global positioning system) on the top of the well cap and at the marsh surface next to the well. During 21CCT03 and 23CCT01, the loggers were only deployed at sites 5 through 8. Each collection consisted of gently removing the logger from the well and noting if there was sediment in the well. If there was sediment in the well, it was cleaned and moved to a new location, a new water level logger was then placed inside the well. Measurements at the new location were collected for the string and logger as well as GPS coordinates and elevation. Since the sediment filled the well, a new logger could not be deployed deep enough to be submerged. As a result, the well had to be removed, cleaned (or swapped with a new well), and moved to a new location. The BaroTROLL was collected every 3 or 6 months depending on the current array of sensors deployed and was always placed back on the GNDNERR fence at the same place and height. The different collection period for the BaroTROLL was acceptable because the post-processing software clipped the data to the necessary dates. Water level data was barometrically corrected using data from the BaroTROLL and the Win-Situ 5 software. Due to the soft sediment and dynamic nature of the estuary surface, the field-based RTK-GPS elevations may be slightly deeper than the actual elevation as a result of the survey rod sinking into the surface. For additional information on positional and elevation values and uncertainty see the GB_Elevation_Data_2020_2023.zip folder of this data release. As a second method to verify the water level data, the water level was corrected to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) by comparing the logger water level measurements to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) water level gauge data from Bayou La Batre Bridge, Alabama (Station ID: 8739803) using R. Water level data for the same time period were downloaded from NOAA and plotted against temporally coincident logger water level data. The slope of the ordinary least squares regression line provided an elevation correction which was then applied to the water level data to adjust it to NAVD88 (Smith and others, 2020). In this region, 0 m NAVD88 is approximately 0.053 m mean sea level (MSL) based on the Grand Bay NERR, Mississippi Sound, MS Tidal Datums (NOAA Station ID: 8740166). Elevation correction values include: 21CCT03 (Site 5 (-0.6527 m), Site 6 (-0.82265 m), Site 7 (-0.73755 m), and Site 8 (-0.88566 m)), 21CCT05 (Site 5 (-0.61746 m), Site 6 (-0.80595 m), Site 7 (-0.72618 m), Site 8 (-0.8998 m), and Site 9 (-0.46844 m)), 22CCT01 (Site 5 (-0.41618 m), Site 6 (-0.86747 m), Site 7 (-0.65315 m), Site 8 (-0.45109 m), and Site 9 (-0.54331 m)), 22CCT03 (Site 5 (-0.57534 m), Site 6 (-0.87396 m), Site 7 (-0.79467 m), Site 8 (-0.314 m), and Site 9 (-0.74173 m)), 22CCT05 (Site 5 (-0.37759 m), Site 6 (-0.84478 m), Site 7 (-0.59982 m), Site 8 (-0.71295 m), and Site 9 (-0.46307 m)), 22CCT07 (Site 5 (-0.39514 m), Site 6 (-0.84478 m), Site 7 (-0.71148 m), Site 8 (-0.81791 m), and Site 9 (-0.64155 m)), 23CCT01 (Site 5 (-0.4754 m), Site 6 (-0.78589 m), Site 7 (-0.61198 m), Site 8 (-0.72278 m). NA values represent no data. Entity_Type_Definition_Source: USGS Attribute: Attribute_Label: Deployment FAN Attribute_Definition: USGS field activity number (FAN) assigned to the deployment trip. Attribute_Definition_Source: USGS Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain: Character string. Each field visit was assigned a FAN by the USGS SPCMSC to assist with dataset tracking. The FAN consists of YYYY-XXX-FA, with YYYY being the 4-digit year, XXX being the trip number, and FA representing that it is a field activity. There are three FANs associated with this dataset: 2021-320-FA, 2022-302-FA, and 2023-301-FA. FANs were used to describe the entire field effort of a project, so alternate FANs were used to differentiate between quarterly sampling trips. Attribute: Attribute_Label: Retrieval FAN Attribute_Definition: USGS field activity number (FAN) assigned to the retrieval trip. The retrieval FAN is also the identifying FAN when referring to the data. Attribute_Definition_Source: USGS Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain: Character string.
