Why was the data set created?

These data were generated for the Delft 3D, EDGR, and XBeach models to indicate how Dauphin Island evolved over the span of approximately 10 years. The merged topographic and bathymetric digital elevation model (DEM) is included in the download file, Initial_Model_DEM.zip as a Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) file. This dataset consists of Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata and a NetCDF file, Initial_DEM.nc, containing the following variables: coordinates of the model grid (Easting and Northing) and the initial bathymetry/topography elevation (z) model grid.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
This DEM contains the initial model topographic and bathymetric elevations. Within the Delft 3D, EDGR, and XBeach models, the coordinates are in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 16 North.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
Vertical datum is the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) with an estimated resolution of 0.01 meters (m).
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
This DEM contains the complete initial model grid elevation. This dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract section. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
The initial DEM, which serves as input for the hindcast model indicates topographic and bathymetric elevations in all model grid cells.
